THROW AWAY SONG
©2016 MRI ~ Words & Music by Daren Thomas Turner
A painful observation of all of you here
Pessimistic, overdriven, troglodytive
Hello! My name is: NAME TAG
Please laminate my head
Stick me in a cubicle
Ass-**** me 'till i'm dead
Hurricanes and earthquakes love my zen Malthusian
'cause you reek of all your cronies and dirty nepotism
I am just an effigy burning up in flames
I'd rather be just thrown away than ever born again
Suicidal tendencies cut into my flesh
To dream in phenobarbital into foreverness
I am the vicious mirror that anorexics fear
Permanent obfuscation
Believing it's real
The point blank honesty that has made you hate my face
Also makes your own opinion of no ****ing consequence
My only friends are mannequins who linger on Facebook
I just posted my obituary and no one even looked

Really enjoyed it! I think you got to where you wanted to go. I especially liked the main guitar groove and the break downs.

Another great song, Daren.  I love the lyrics.  I know it's your style to mix vocals down, but your words are too good to be buried.  Otherwise, this ending is cool; I like endings like that.  You've been missed around here.

AIC-ish for sure!   While a bit dark, it's some good stuff... I likes.     But yeah, the vocals are just a bit too buried for my tastes, and should be standing proud with those big guitars.

I really enjoy the fact that everyone here has a great set of ears - thanks to all.
The vocals were indeed buried even more than I 'artistically' do; I think my ears were fatigued from mixing.
Taking the advice here I boosted them up front and center and tweaked the heavy guitars. Pretty sinister sound now - offset by the clean guitars/acoustics in the breakdowns and intro. I'm loving how the clean DADGAD based chords ring out I was inspired by Andy Summers / Walking On The Moon.  Tune is getting there now.
muchas gracias amigos ;)  good to have some time to be back here again

Oh yeah, much better! If you are still tweaking, the heavy guitars may be too loud. Not by much...just a few places where the backing instruments are overwhelmed, and those sound great when they come through.

it's actually quite nice to hear this cos we don't hear grunge anymore do we?
the main rhythm guitars are good but need to draw back a little at some points (chorus/solo)
love the vocals and the change up with the acoustic

I love the way you guys put together such a powerful dark sound. I'll admit the words are kinda scary to me, and I guess that's why I don't write grunge :)  but they line up well with the feel of this song.

The mix is really good. I love the DADGAD tuning. I use the same tuning a lot myself, but I don't sound this cool :)

First off, great song, great instrument work, and excellent singing performance. All are blended into a whole that I think could be pretty much an anthem or a modern classic rock tune - I'm serious.

If this were my mix, I'd get rid of that "metronome" thing in the first 8 bars. Also, I'd lower the rhythm guitar that pops too loudly in the left speaker.

As for the vocal, it's possible that because you wrote the song and know the lyrics by heart, you "hear" them in the mix, where a first-time listener can't. As I first-time listener, I'm catching about one word out of three.

Hello my name is Ninja? just a guess. :) Am I right? What do I win ???

OK I just read your lyrics, now I'm getting it better. Those are some pretty good words you have chosen. I think it would be ok to diminish the guitar line just a little to make the vocals more intelligible for people who haven't read the lyrics.

    Really cool song here.

    cheers,

Tom- you have great ears- I actually remixed with your post in mind...except that I kept in the metronome thing b/c it's kinda odd sounding and denotes that the changes are indeed in 10/8 ;p  Boosted vox & re-tracked the bass myself concentrating on tone and using only fingers, as Dan (usually bass) is in Montana. I think it breathes more without any loss of fullness as I EQd bass to not interfere with drums/kick amplitudes etc-

This is a cool song. In the vibe of AIC but a different feel. The mix seemed to have too much mid range for me but the clarity is there. Excellent!

Very creative song Daren -- from the intro on it's well thought out and executed.  Guitars sound great as does the bass.  Vocals are good and have just the right amount of "sneer" to fit the song.  And, the drummer is very good -- those percussive bits were just right.  Good luck with your new album -- hope you get plenty of traction with it.  !!

Since now I am tasting writing lyrics in english first I checked your words. Now I am not an internationally well-known and acknowledged poet () so my opinion might not be a gigantic milestone in the life of your band but I think the lyrics is well written. At some point it might be "raw" but the style can handle it I guess.
I like the ending and the "atmosphere" of the song.

I definitely like the sound of this song.  First thought was Alice In Chains but not as heavy.  I love the pictures you paint with the words, though personally (and not a dig on you), I feel going with the f-bombs detracts from the impact and genius of the rest of the words.  It's like you have $500 words with a few 50c words thrown in.  Kinda cheapens it.  This is just my opinion as someone that doesn't like to use or hear that kind of language, but I'm not judging.  I promise.

Musically, this is a great mix.  I honestly can't think of anything I'd change as for as music / mix goes.  Thanks for sharing this.

hey thanks for bringing this up in fact. i myself actually debated over it for the same reasons; one of those being my 2-year-old little rocker who loves it but I make him listen to a private censored version lol - my buddy Chris came in with his rant and F-bomb laden "phone poetry" all over the place, which fit the "tone" of the song, societal alienation and basically living in a cubicle at work 70% of your life etc-- the death of the America dream -

but the "character" of the story actually speaks like that. it's actually based on a co-worker who destroyed his cubicle one day after being fired then wrote all this sappy angry suicidal crap on Facebook - hence the lyrics - but his life was truly destroyed by a corporate takeover and firing. there are some subtle political references, more at a political zeitgeist with a bit of a fist bump to my Mexican friends, of whom I have many, living here in Florida etc- but less at a political song and more at a social commentary/ mirror song etc- inside an artistic soundscape that combines a few styles

your point is very well taken tho- thanks again -

    - Daren T

    the bassist is so good

wow. Dan (MRI bassist) is actually on extended job training in Colorado so I ended up tracking the bass myself on this one. I don't play with a pick - my attack isn't as good as Dan's but I just wanted a healthy bass presence as the song is odd/unique in a lot of ways enough and didn't wish to make too busy bass-wise. I didn't venture out into many fills and just kept it simple K.I.S.S. approach lol

    thanks bro -

Clearest vocal I have heard on your music!  Ha, how ya doin, buddy?  I actually really like this song.  Instruments are great and I liked the singer.  It makes me want to pick up the bass and add all kinds of effects and just SOLO for an hour.  Of course it would suck but that's what I want to do listening to this.  Animal music.  Man, Daren, I really love this!

Well now that was just fun as hell.  I really dig this tune.  Very nice job here.  Lyrics were great, too.

So what effects were you using on the vox anyways?

Good stuff.  Agree with Lynn, et. al., good lyrics deserve to be heard.  You got 'em... let us hear 'em.
