Tick borne illness

So I got bit my a tick here in Massachusetts (where I live).
Didn't think anything of it. Then bam ! It was all over. What I had was "Anaplasmosis".

I just got home last Thursday. I was in the hospital for 5 days.
Just wanted to send out the word to any of you, This is real. just don't take it lightly like I once did.
I thought for sure I was dying. Never been bit by a black widow spider but this has to be close.
All my organs were shutting down and im still not right even after 2 weeks. Im slow, splurged speech.
I just hope im able to make music again like I once did. Im just happy to be getting around.
Take caution people.

That sucks, Chuck!
My father in law got bitten by one some years ago, and got Lyme disease. He still struggles with it.
Got antibiotics too late to cure it properly.
Best of luck for a speedy recovery.

Nasty little buggers.  Had a co-worker get Lyme's disease from a deer tick while out hunting.  It nearly killed him!

Yikes. Ya, those little buggers mean business. Apparently they'll live in ya for up to a year (IIRC) and for the lucky folks they may feel a little sick but the tick eventually dies. For the unlucky folks... well, you now know all about it.

Nice thick denim with no exposed skin/gaps where they can get in (so pants tucked into boots and laced up tight) from the waist down is a good idea when wandering through the woods or tall grass. Always watch out for the distinct skin reactions (many pics online) after being in the woods.

Glad you made it through, well... alive. Sounds like it may have messed you up pretty good in a lasting way though.

Nature. Beautiful, life giving, needs to be protected at all costs... but can and will kill you if given half a chance and has nearly infinite ways of acheiving that.

Feel better.

Chuck,

Sorry to hear this. Pulled a tick off me a week ago. Nothing yet playing out the odds in this area.
Some advice I hope you will take to heart especially since you were slammed so heavily.
Crux of the matter is to get healed quickly so as not to let any of the nerve complications become chronic. The body can get comfortable adapting to a disability after awhile and can give up a lot of energy trying to actually repair the problem.

I'm assuming you were put on doxycycline for awhile. In milder cases, it is discontinued 3 days after any fever has resolved, You were probably a candidate for a full 14 day course if the docs went that way. If so avoid any metal in the diet for 2 hours on either side of the pill as it will get bound up and go thru you without being absorbed. Means all milk products, vitamins with minerals and any of the fast antacids (Rolaids, Tuns etc).

Build back up intertinal good guys with a life yogurt or wide spectrum probiotic pill twice a day, 2 hours at least apart from the antibiotic and continue for at least 2 weeks after the last pill. Avoid strong sun exposure because the tetracyclines can fry you severely if you are one of the unlucky ones. This effect goes about 3 days after quitting.

Race to rebuild is on. Diet should be fresh and living.

Moderate daily exercise and limbering moves to keep circulation and circuits connected.

Daily B complex vitamins to help with nerve repair.

John

Bummer Chuck.  Speedy recovery your way.

I live in the heart of tick/chigger country.  I spray every time I go outside without getting in my car.

Wow that sounds terrible Chuck, what an ordeal. I used to live on Nantucket so full body inspections for the little ****'s was a daily occurrence. I knew someone who got Lyme's disease from a tick, definitely no joke.

Thank you everyone very much for the well wishes. You guys are great people.

JohnKenn, You are correct, I am still taking the doxycycline. I will be on it for a total of 30 days once I complete the pill cycle (2 pills a day = 1 pill every 12 hours).
The antibiotic itself is nasty as hell. But im also suffering from major side effects so some of it I can not tell if its the doxycycline or the side effects.

the slurred speech and slow reactions are what is most troubling to me.
I love music, recording with Sonar, writing songs but it all seems secondary to me right now. which is very sad indeed. My wife is 6 months pregnant and being there (healthy) for my child's birth is the #1 thing for me.
I broke down big time in the hospital thinking I was dying and wouldn't see my son being born.
Of course Im sure was just being a bit over dramatic (like I typically always am). But it did put a lot of stuff in perspective for me.

Anyway, there is a huge rise this season in Anaplasmosis cases. So if you even have a question if you might have been bit, do the right thing boys and girls. This thing has scared the living ship out of me. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Thanks again for all the kind responses. you guys are great people.

Ticks are bad news with all the diseases they are now vectors for.

Some folks are developing allergies from the bites that make them allergic to red meat in particular.

I have a farm with 28 or so acres, mostly wooded. You really don't even need to be in the woods to get ticks on you. It's getting better since I have guinea hens and chickens running around eating them now. But last year was killer.  Between me and my dog, we had 24 ticks on us in 2 days time. The lady that owned the property previously didn't treat her dogs for anything.... no flea, tick or heart worm protection and she had 8 dogs. We had to have a pest company come in last year to treat the area. They had to spray 2x to knock them back. This year, they are less in number and we now have the birds walking around doing the natural pest control thing.

The key to avoiding the diseases they carry is to avoid getting bit in the first place.... but if you do go into areas where they are 2 things are crucial.  And don't go asking on facebook because there is so much wrong if not just plain BAD information out there.

Here's the right way to do this:

1. remove them quickly. The advice I hear is that getting them off in less than 8 hrs lessens the chance of getting a disease since the transfer of the bacteria takes time. Of course, the sooner the better.

2. remove them properly. You need to grasp then as close to the head as possible and pull them off. Use tweezers if necessary. You do not want to do anything that squeezes the ticks body or attempts to kill the tick on you like burning it, putting alcohol on it, or suffocating it. All those things cause it to regurgitate and that's the last thing you want. That practically guarantees an infection if it's carrying a disease.

Even better.....Prevent them from getting on you in the first place.

1 Tuck your pants in at the boot.... blousing the pants or use gaiters.
2 Tuck shirts and use long sleeves.
3 Use DEET containing bug sprays

I have been doing something else..... I went to the pet store to buy my dog a new tick & flea collar. It's called Soresto. Pretty costly, about $60 but lasts 8 months. I'm testing that on my dog. We've been using Bravecto but I don't like the idea of giving her something that makes her toxic for 3 months....
So, while at the pet store I saw the cheaper tick/flea collars.... about $18 each and decided to buy 2 of them. I place them on my boots where they are NOT in contact with my skin because they are not designed for humans. The pants legs cover them and they stay in place nicely when slipped through the boot pull tab on the back of the boot.   Since I have been using them I have had ZERO ticks on me. I figured out that the majority of the ticks were coming up my legs since they hang out in the grass and leaves near the ground. Ticks that hitch a ride and start working up the pant leg inside (which is the majority) come in contact with that stuff , turn back, fall off, and die.

BTW: The Seresto collar seems to be doing well for the dog too.

Get well soon Chuck, and thank you for the warning. Reading your story brings it all home and shakes the complacency we all develop from hearing about it so often on the news.

Get ready for the baby, it will be great.

I saw in the paper the other day about a child that got rocky mountain spotted from a tick and died.

Apparently....global warming and human encroachment will likely see the incidence of tick born diseases escalate.
