Time Away - New song from me featuring CrayZee_one

I wrote this one a few weeks ago. Mark (aka CrayZee) laid down the vox and bass tracks on this one. The left channel is my 18w Marshall and the right is my Vibrolux and Taylor 710.

Please let me know how to make it better. Thanks, Darryl

    Nice mix Darryl!
And, its a rockin tune too!

I gotta say, its a priviledge to work with Darryl. He's a great song writer!
Thanks for the opportunity to blow some dust off my vocal chords and keep my bass working!

    Cheers,
    CrayZee.

Very eerie sounding!! First thing I noticed was the snare. I liked the tone and it had just enough crack for my taste but it sounded far away. I'd bring it a bit more up front. Actually, now that I'm listening, I'd bring the drum mix more up front. But, that is my taste, I like the drums in your face.

I liked the guitar tones you used, for both the acoustic and the distortion. They are very complimentary of each other. Just enough distortion without it being overpowering.

As far as the song goes, I felt it kinda went on and on without going anywhere. I actually wanted to hear it start to rip as the song went on. I kept feeling like it was about to; kept saying to myself, "OK, here it is" but it never was. Then again, that could be a preference thing as well because I am partial to heavy

    Nice job!!

Darryl, cool tune. D's comments are right on, especially the vox, lighten the amount of verb and/or use a pre-delay to get it out of the Haas effect zone (put it above 50ms). Also really like to hear a crunchier middle 8 with a wailing guitar solo; the one you have at 3:22 is cool, just a little too cool ;-) I like the mix of acoutic and electric guitars.

Crazy Mark, nice playing, nice and tight. Sweet tone too, especially that bit at 3:22. You got a nice touch of bridge pup, lightly scooped; is that a Jazz bass?

    CrayZee,

Thanks, Mark! Your bass has made my last two songs come alive, IMO. My guitar and your bass really compliment each other. So get busy and write some songs so I can lay down some gee-tar tracks.

    Hi DSomething,

I like your description of eerie. The drums are a popular problem with me. DOD drum loops are preprocessed and you get a very compressed snare, for example. I hope to address this in my next songs with DOD's version which lets you mix the individual hits of the loops.

I liked the guitar tones you used, for both the acoustic and the distortion. They are very complimentary of each other. Just enough distortion without it being overpowering.

Thanks for saying this. I spent a lot of time trying to get the right tone out of the amps, mike placement etc. I didn't use any pedals, I just plugged in and hit the record button. I ordered a new Celestion V30 to compliment my G12H30 in my Marshall (I can't wait to bolt it in).

As far as the song goes, I felt it kinda went on and on without going anywhere. I actually wanted to hear it start to rip as the song went on. Sounds like some past relationships I've had. I think I know what you mean. I had my doubts on this one and felt better about it as I went along. The lyrics are perhaps too simple and they aren't really telling a story, but they're saying what's on my mind. There's probably no way market a song like this, but it captures the mood of what's going on with me at the present time.

I appreciate your comments because helps me make better songs. Thanks, Darryl

    Hi Ed,

Ok, I'll relook at the vocal delay. I had to look up what Hass effect means and I think I know what you mean. Good comment.

Also really like to hear a crunchier middle 8 with a wailing guitar solo; the one you have at 3:22 is cool, just a little too cool ;-) I like the mix of acoutic and electric guitars.

The middle 8 was an experiment (e.g. change the key, change the groove, get two guitars playing something slightly different to get a stereo effect) that perhaps did not go as well as I originally thought. Mark did such a kickass job in that section that I'm thinking of backing off the guitars and making it more of a bass solo. Thoughts?

    Thanks for commenting. Darryl

Thanks ed im glad you enjoyed it!
My bass rig i used on that one is a Warwick Thumb 5 (bolt on neck) through a Trace Elliot AH350 GP12SMX head. It is fairly chunky.
I did have about an 80/20 ratio on the bridge p/up (which i dont usually do) just for that song. The neck p/up is pretty close to the middle of the body on a thumb, so i usually play around 50/50.
I really enjoy your fretless sound too ed. Ive been thinking about a fretless for a long time and your sound may spurn me on enough to buy one

    Cheers,
    CrayZee.

    Good tune!

I agree with D and Ed about the drums, but that for that..

The rhytmic idea at 0:55 is cool. I was just wondering, if there should be some more constant sound to back up, some pad/organ, or just long guitar chords, maybe? Or maybe not on the first time, but on the second time at 2:17.

Overall, this sounds really good and a full song, but I have to agree with guys here, that it may sound a bit that it isn't going anywhere. Maybe something "huge" after the halfway of the song, to bring some life.

Playing and singing are excellent, and the mix sounds good to me too.

    Petri,

A pad of some type in the chorus might be cool. Thanks for your comments. Regards, Darryl

Really good tune. I would like to hear the vocal "pop" a little more in the chorus , possibly compress it a bit more and bump up the gain a db or two on the chorus to kind of set it apart from the verse.

another vote for a Pad in the mid 8

    Hey Spinedoc,

Thanks. I think I need to re-look at the vocals in the chorus. They're a tiny-bit pitchy (sorry Mark :-) ) and I may try to V-vocal a little and compress a little more per your suggestion.

Glad you like the tune. I may play around with a pad during the next mix and see what happens.
