Time Is Everything (with Ian Ferrin)

Ian Ferrin sent me this really cool Piano /Drum track, and asked if I would be interested in adding some Bass & Guitar...
I liked his arrangement and playing so much, I agreed to
play on it, and add some lyrics...
This is Ian's original Piano/Drums/ Percussion arrangement... I added 3 Rhythm Guitars, Bass, Strings, Organ, Vocals and Lead Guitar...

Ian will probably post his own version eventually... I'm looking forward to hearing it...

"Time Is Everything"
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=769187

edit: Just added a new re-mixed version...
bass is clearer and more defined...
completely dumped an elec. rhythm guitar that was causing problems with the feel...
filtered and widened the acoustic guitar...
changed fx on Vocals...
Lyrics
Time is a mystery,
we think we know, but we can’t agree how it works at all,
like a wave, does it rise and fall, or is it linear?
or does it even move at all?
It’s a mystery
Like the air we breathe, Time is everything to me.
Time is running, Time stands still. Time is money, no Time to kill.
Time is slipping, slipping away, Time of our lives, Time of the day.
Time is everything
Time is old, Time is new, Time is different for me and you.
Time is near, Time is far, Time is now, whenever you are.

It’s a mystery we can feel but cannot see.
We can’t hear it but we know that it must be.
Like the air it must be something we all need.
Time is short, Time is long, the timing right or the timing is wrong.
Time is slow, Time is fast, Time is future, and Time is past
Time is everything
Time is curved, Time is straight, Time is early, and Time is late.
Time is everything.

Thanks Lynn, it sounded good on mine too... but I just listened in my wife's car and the bass was farting out a bit... Herb was right... as usual... the bass was heavy and needed a little filtering... as did the Acoustic Guitar...

This new mix should sound better...
Thanks Herb and Joshua & Lynn...

Really cool tune. Enjoyed listening to that.

A nice, big, fat sound in the instrument mix. I like that. I find the vox a bit thin and reedy by comparison though. It sounds a bit phasey to me. I am not entirely sure what I hear there. It could also be reverb type used or the vocal layering that is causing the issue for me.

Well, Frank, I like the tune but.... it seems to me that the vocals are too far back, maybe too much reverb.  It could be the sound you were going for.  It doesn't have the total "clarity" that your mixes always have.  OK, it could be I'm still reeling from my taxes and taking it out on you, LOL!!  Here's the deal, I totally like the song but it seemed kinda muddy to me.  I listened on the bx8a monitors (normally very accurate) but I'll lisnten on the Sennheiser phones in a little bit.   I really liked the song and lyrics.

I hear Todd Rundgren in the melody and phrasing, which is weird since I wouldn't normally associate either you or Ian with him. Really like what you did vocally here.

Playing is good, but the piano sounds like it wanders out of the pocket too much.

+1 on the vocal too far back and the muddy bottom.

Thanks James... I appreciate your ears, and always look forward to your feedback...
Ian actually raised the same issue, but I'm not hearing it yet...
The Piano part is not "drifting"... Ian's Piano is dead-nuts with his drums arrangement... if anything is out of the pocket... it would have to be something I added to his original tracks... maybe one of my guitar parts, or the bass... I guess the effect is the same... one or more of my parts may be causing the piano to sound like its out...    The muddy bottom is mine too...

Very nice. Love the song - the mix needs a little tidying up but only minor stuff.
Arrangement-wise, I love when the heavy chugging guitar comes in behind the vocal.

Frank, I thought I was hearing a guitar part in there that could be part of the problem.   The bass is not nearly as defined as your usual mixes.  Part of the problem?  It does sound better to me today but the bass could be more present, or something.  You all know I'm not a mixmaster but I do hear something here..  I like the song even more than yesterday.  I had seen something on the Colonel somewhere and saw their videos.  They are a "rough" sounding band that somehow makes you like them.  They are not as refined as your guys but very interesting.  So, Pharoah got to you? :-)

Thanks Daryl... I like that acoustic guitar too, but that part is probably the main source of mud in the mix and it may also be adversly affecting the feel... I really appreciate the great feedback...

yeah... the band is rough but they're having fun... did you know the drummer is Derek Trucks' little brother?

you are spot-on about the guitar problem... I'm pretty sure it's the Acoustic Guitar masking the bass... I've got to figure a way around this, 'cause it's a really cool bass part...

Thanks so much for the help Warren... I'll work this out... please check back later...

Huge improvement. The vox sound much better. I had no complaints with anything else before, and its still tight now. Great job on the mix Frank.

Great stuff Frank. I don't have any particulars. I like the new mix. Vocs are more defined.
The best part of the song to me is the lyrics/message. Don't really know what you're saying (I mean, what you mean if anything) but it makes one think about time and all it's ramifications and opens up the thought process pretty big.  did you write the lyrics/melody?

If you tracked this to a piano/drums track and redid everything, I think it maybe Ian should re-track the piano to your groove.

I thought I heard a little CSNY in there, but I think the vocal reminded me more of Peter Frampton. Well played track. Good job on every thing. I thought it was a bit 70s, and thats a good thing.

Whoa, Ian lucked in to this one :-) My favorite bass player on the forum, and one of my favorite guitarists. Sounds really impressive, I echo the CSN vibe.  With a little bit of a Cheers vibe thrown in there at the end? :-)

    Really cool production Frank.

I would have preferred to hear the solo a bit more.

TBH honest the vocal had some pitch problems (to me) but overall seemed to fit the song. Still, I should be able to sing so well.
