Timeline stops abruptly after project begins

I'm having an issue where there are tracks recorded and when I press play for playback or recording another track, the timeline stops about a beat into the recording but the project continues to play with audible playback. I am unable to tell where the current position is in the project. It must be a setting or something. I do not have any markers flagged and this happens to every project I have saved. Help.     Have you tried the scroll lock key?

    The drivers for the mbox2 were not quite working, had to download from ASIO4all. It now works. Thanks for the reply though!
