To Ebay in th UK

Not new to ebay but I am beginning to sell outside the US. Recently listed an item and a "chap" from the UK asked me how much Tax he would pay??? Since we don't pay tax over here unless we sell in our own state I am at a loss?? I intended to charge him whatever it cost to send it to him. What is this tax business and how do we work that???Is that something he should take care of?

Which of you great poobaahs might know the answer to this one and is there a fee incurred for asking? ;)

Don't, I repeat DON'T let Jonbouy handle your transaction.

OK maybe you don't get that joke.

But..... as I understand it, if it comes to the chap in such a way that it does not look like a business transaction (i.e. it's addressed from Joe to Sam), no such tax is usually to be paid. However, if comes in some business (i.e. addressed from Acme Enterprises to Sam) he may be required to pay a tax.

Hey UK, have I got it right (from my few experiences)?

No haven't been here long enough for that, but I can read between the lines a little........as far as jokes in general go about half of what you guys say on here slides right past me...and maybe thats either for the better , intentiona or I'm dense...or all of those.

FYI my sense of humour went away and hasn't been back, maybe if I stay on here long enough I can recoup it. OK THE WAL MART THING WAS FUNNY...well in a weird sorta way but funny is funny!

Thanks Bapu for your help> I owe ya man and your ok I don't care what they say about you.

From a Canadian usually buying from Americans, sellers often note that "taxes and import fees are the responsibility of the buyer."  I pay the seller for the shipping, then UPS/FEDEX/Whoever gets it through customs and charges me the fees and taxes COD.
To Britain, it's probably the same.

He should be able to find out by Googling his government import taxes.

Just looked at your sales.  It might be worth telling the Brits that they run on a different voltage from North America and electronics aren't usually compatible.

Well Kroneborg that may be so...and they DO say a lot of things about you know who. I'm guessing Bapu is  well liked and chided appropriately. At least I hope thats the case, and I really hope not half of it is true :)

Ugh....I'll never forget the keyboard controller I sold to a guy in Canada. It was one of those 88 key CME UF 8 chinese jobbies and it weighed in at  about 100 lbs packed. BIG MISTAKE. Our postal service charged me three times what I charged him because it was a few inches too long. They have a lot of safety measures there too. They wanted to make sure I wasn't packing uzzies in the box and as I recall they did have unexpected fees,at least to me they were although I think he paid those as you say.

I said I would never do that again, course after talking to myself I have changed my mind:0)...........anyho Thanks a million!!

Oh and thanks for the heads up on the voltages as well. I would hate to see one of those guys plug a 115 volt plug into a 220 or 230 circuit. Years ago I was working on a construction site and they accidentally wired a 115 volt outlet to a 230 volt circuit. The guy who plugged the circular saw into it could not believe the performance ...............why it must have ran at double rpm.....for maybe 10 seconds  until things started to get nasty and smoke and burn. That saw lived in the fast lane.

There was also the time they wired the doorbell to the furnace and the furnace to the doorbell......I'll save that one for now.

basically the buyer will have to pay import duty and import vat...VAT rate is 20% here, and import duty is likely to be around 3-5% but the buyer would have to contact HMRC for exact figures (every item has a different rate - see http://customs.hmrc.gov.u...;propertyType=document )

goood luck working it out! i think it means if you sell it for less than you paid there'll be no VAT, but i'm not sure...

VAT only applies if you're a business

Ie an individual selling to another individual VAT does not apply.

If a business sells to an Individual the business has to charge the VAT to the individual and then pass that onto the Government in there VAT return.

IF a business sells to a business, they can either charge the VAT which the other business can then right off against there own VAT bill, or they can not charge the VAT and the other business has to sort it out through there own accounts.

In Starise case as he is not a business and is selling second hand goods to an individual VAT does not apply especially as he is not making a profit.

Export Tax might apply but it will be down to the individual, if you send them the item in a branded box then customs might look into it, if you just send it in a plain packing box as its a transaction between private individuals itw ill be fine.

The tax is there to stop me ordering a brand new bass from American at like 50% less cost because of no import tax.

The onus is on the buyer to make sure he complies with local taxes (VAT) and any import duty to be paid, as long as you keep accounts of your sales and shipping you'll have no reason to worry about it.

right.  when he asks you this question you tell him you don't know that he'll have to contact them and find out for himself.  YOU won't be collecting any taxes from him but Customs will if there are any taxes to be paid.
