To the One

Hi,

New piece up on soundclick, "To the One". Instrumental, reflective, about 4 minutes long. The piece has some areas that need some fine tuning but I think this is pretty close to the final version for this piece. I got some feedback and some good constructive pointers on a different fourm and would like to also hear comments and critiques from folks here before making any changes.

Hi Bill, nice composition. It sounded as though some one is conducting a written score and a group playing. The music brought the visuals of green fields and mountains to my mind.I felt the music could be more wet.I suggest you to look into string section a little more deep.As it is very nice music!

    Hi, Bill

"To The One" is gently winding its gentle spell in the room as I type. I haven't heard something with a Clarinet as the lead sound in quite awhile. What a wonderful choice for this.

Unpredictable textures throughout, sometimes in a wistfully meandering way before returning to the more definite statements the music knows it wants to make. Strings supporting and following nicely throughout.

I really liked this, and feel it probably worked on my mood the way you want it to.

As I listened, I saw Chasekh's suggestion that the strings be "a little more deep." I think he means more present, louder in the mix? If he did, I would agree. There's plenty of distinction between the Clarinet and the strings, they could have a bit less contrast in levels without damaging the mix. There were times especially when I was hoping the Cellos and Basses would swell in a bit more assertively than they do.

One other thing about the strings--they have a tendency to stop and start rather than continuously flow. Maybe it's from them being played in a keyboard style rather than individually? I think they would benefit from editing which would extend their sustained notes right up to each other, so they would contribute a more consistently flowing mood the way the sum of the piece feels.

Back to what you've actually done--It's very nice, and I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.

    Chandrasekhar, Randy,

Thanks for the listen and comments. I will work with the strings - bring them up a little, put back some of the low end I shelved out, bring up the cellos. The strings are played keyboard style and I don't have the midi (starting to look into getting set up for midi recording ... ) so I will have to see if I can find some way to coax out some sustain and continuity through plain old audio mixing/plugins. Will look into adding some more ambience/reverb too.
Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it.

Wow, another wonderful instrumental!! Well done Bill.
I admire all of you orchestra-based composers. Your imagination of conducting a whole orchestra ... you guys are the modern days Mozarts, Beethovens and Tchaikovskys.
I admit, the strings issue is beyond me, so I just sat back and enjoyed this wonderful piece of ear-candy.
    Thanks for sharing, Bill
    Heinz.

It is beautiful. I think I am falling in love... The song is so soft and tender that it could be a lullaby for someone you love. I think I would add a little reverb to sustain some of the instruments.

    Heinz, David, Dazed,

Thanks for the kind words. I got a couple comments about the reverb, so I will definitely be adding a bit more of that. Thanks so much.

    Hi Bill,

That was very pretty. A lovely, soothing piece of music. I turned it up pretty loud in my headphones, and I'm not sure if I agree about adding more reverb - the mix sounds really nice and clear to me as it is.

    Hey ToneCarver,
yes, that worked and so did that track.
It has a nice loose quality, particularly the first half and builds from ponderous to possitive at just the right rate.
This is an excellent piece let down by cheap samples.
Not your fault i know but when i think of how good this could be...

opaque slogan - thanks for the listen and the kind words. Sorry for the "cheap samples" sound .. I don't know how much of that is due to my actual setup/hardware and how much of that is due to my mixing/hearing limitations ... ... but I am busy researching options and am seriously considering some changes to my rig.

    Thanks again,

It's nothing to do with mixing/hearing limitations on your behalf, it's merely that the raw samples you are using are no where near good enough to do your music justice.
Pure synthesizer tones (proper synths like virtual analogs not sample based "synths") can sound far more expressive and organic than samples of this quality.

In the past i have shelled out huge amounts of money on orchestral sounds.
Each intrument with different playing styles sampled at four different volumes and it still sounded fake and tacky.
Make sure you do your homework before you invest in a new sample set.
There are very good sampled instruments out there and i've heard recordings recently which stunned me as far as realism goes.

Take your time over this and ask as many people as you can for their opinion on the ultimate orchestral sound set, quite soon after the same names crop up several times you'll have your short list.
I can't help you as far as this quest goes as i gave up on orchestral sounds a few years ago. (after being burnt so many times i stopped putting my hand in the fire and became a synth addict)
    Good luck with your search.
