To the Prog users of X2

I know it's not Christmas yet, and this is old hat, and probably on the wrong forum, but this is for the Prog fans - you know who you are..

That was fantastic... Listening to the two original tracks by the band *Somewhere* now. No activity for the last year? That doesn't bode well.

And somebody's just rehashed a Genesis album... In the charts now... Worrying what is going on. Jeff Lynne remade his own songs to be faximilies of themselves. Jeff Wayne has done the same thing with different voices. Maybe McCartney should do his own interpretation of Sgt Pepper. No one wants to divide the cake any more.

Speaking of Genesis my friend Nad Sylvan is currently working with & on tour with Steve Hackett.
I'm sure some of you may know Nad from his work on mp3.com, Soundclick , Artistlaunch over the years.
He also performs with Agents Of Mercy with Roine Stolt / The Flower Kings.
He's very inspired by Gabriel / Genesis & a talented writer in his own right.
He's psyched working with Hackett, said he's touring the states around March.
Check him out if you get a chance.

Very interesting Carl, thanks for sharing.  I've been an admirer/fan of Steve Hackett since I was a wee lad, and although I don't aim to emulate his playing style I am aware of his influences the most.  His re-interpretations of old Genesis material have been quite a success and I believe this is what his tour will represent.  Just goes to show you that there's still a market for that material.  I always rated the older (1970's) side of Genesis as being the better part of their career.  Hackett has managed to last pretty well as a solo artist, particularly impressing in classical circles with his nylon guitar work, although his music seems to have had its fair share of hits and misses (and I'm not referring to sales).

Are you a Genesis/Hackett fan yourself?  Or prog in general?  I see from your web site that you claim to have an eclectic mix of styles, described as such that seemed to reflect my own (solo) material.  It would be interesting to compare notes...

Sorry, but I fail to see the humor.  Why mock a music style that is complex and intellectual?  I don't think I've ever seen parodies of the simplistic styles of Rap or Punk.  Maybe because they are already parodies of themselves.

Are you for real?  Who was mocking?  It is patently obvious that they love that style of music.  Did you listen to any of their music?  No one but a lover of prog could have written the lyric, let alone the music.

I think you missed the point, or have had a sense of humour bypass.

Prog has to be self mocking, have a lighter side.  It shouldn't take itself too seriously.  What have you been listening to?

Oh, and I've seen plenty of parodies of punk and hip hop.  They just weren't as funny or poignant as this.

    Hi Peter,
Love prog but was more into the Brand-X & fusion stuff.
I like music in general, have respect for most styles & artists.
These days I'll generally throw on some Monk or FZ.

I loved Brand X back in the days when Phil Collins was putting his efforts into that project, especially Moroccan Roll and Product.  Also loved the Return to Forever band and some of the stuff Al Di Meola did.   I explore a bit of jazz on my solo stuff, one song that has more of a quirky vibe feel to it and another where I found myself needing to add a brass section and sax solo, though I wouldn't cast myself as a jazz musician as such.  That's the cool thing about doing your own music is that you can play unrestrictedly and see what happens.

    But I digress....

Bill Bruford used rename albums he'd played on.

Starless and Bible Black became "Bra-less and Slightly Slack".

When the eighties Crimson released their third album, and the tour was going to be sponsored by a fruit and veg company, he suggested "Tree of a Perfect Pear".

My favorite was Rick Wakeman's renaming of the Yes album "Union" as "Onion".

    Hi, Cakewalkers (Cakewalkistas?).

John, lead singer of Somewhere, here. I just registered to post this (I'm a Reason user myself - but I actually fiddled with Cakewalk in the late 90s) after doing some vanity googling and finding this thread.

First of all, thanks for the many nice comments. We appreciate them greatly.

Second of all, we are still a going concern, we've just had a run of bad luck. Our bass player left us in early summer just as we were laying down basic tracks for the debut album. It was an amicable split and we've found a frankly fantastic replacement.

So we decided to step back a bit and let our new bass player become part of the group and its compositions rather than just having him ape his predecessor. It's a decision that has paid off in spades musically, but has naturally slowed our progression (heh). The music we're working on is a lot more structurally complex than our released stuff (and longer, though we have yet to pass the 10-minute mark - there's no point in extending a song just to do it) so it takes a while to get it down.

And just as we were getting ready to start looking at recording again in October...our guitarist (also producer and one of the two principal songwriters) was in an accident and hurt his left hand quite severely. It has only just now healed to the point we he can start playing again.

But the timeline is set for us to have principal recording done when summer rolls around, leading to at least one gig already lined up, probably followed by another at the Sweden Prog Fest in the fall of 2013. As for album release date, I don't even dare guess at this point, but Magnitizdat (probable title) will be made, and will be followed by another album, as we have raw material for at least two already.

Oh, how I ramble. Anyways, what I meant to say was: thanks, and no we're not defunct. Carry on as you were.

Hey John, thanks for replying. Good to hear the band is still happening, because I really liked what I heard. I'll keep a look out for anything you guys produce.

Working on an album myself for the last 5 or 6 years, I'm in no position to complain about how long this stuff takes to create.

    Good luck!

Great stuff! We watched it on Saturday night and there was a definite scent of nostalgia in the air.

And for anyone interested, Steve Hackett is touring the UK next Autumn, tour title is "Genesis Revisited"

    Just a heads up.
