Today the Magic happened....

...tomorrow we mix.

I managed to get all the ingredients together for my late Gran's favourite fruit-cake recipe.

I'm leaving the dried fruit overnight to soak.

It's gonna be good, she had some influential friends.

I hope the fruit is soaking in rum. That makes for a mighty fine cake.

Those panty waist cakes they sell in the stores don't hold a candle to a real home make fruit cake.

My MIL makes a "tipsey cake" every now and then that is sooooooo good. At least we all think so after having a slice or two of it.

This is an alcohol free zone Herb, so it's indian tea and fruit juice as a marinade.

But it's the real homespun fruit cake I'm after.  My Gran was quite some lady in the kitchen she grew up in 'service' and made head cook in a few years which was quite an achievement for a young lady during the Edwardian era.

She spent a lifetime cooking mostly as head in a canteen setting, through the 30's and during the war, she became school cook after the war, and was head cook at my primary school so I got plenty of favourtism at meal times.  Even when she retired she started cooking for the Salvation Army as a civilian handing out free meals to people down on their luck with contributed ingredients.  She could make something good out of next to nothing.

Her fruit cake was legendary, and is a real warming memory from my early youth.  Fortunately she left a recipe book she started to compile when things got tight during the war, it's from that book this recipe is coming from.

I won't come close to doing it justice but I thought it was high-time I gave it my best shot.
