Today's upgrade experience....

... was sort of amazing, in a subtle kind of way.

Had a couple of hours free late afternoon, so I paid for the upgrade, downloaded the command centre, logged in, and clicked "install all" on the Sonar entry.

CCC went about its business for about 45 mins, and said the install was complete. Wasn't asked for a serial number or anything at any point. Super easy and well-designed.

Fired up Sonar, let it scan for VSTs, went and pulled in all my track and project templates for previous versions.

At which point, the next client arrived to do about five hours work on an already underway project. I decided, as a quick test, to pick it up in Sonar Platinum, but revert to X3 as soon as anything went awry. Well, nothing happened. No crashes, nothing missing that should be there, no playback issues, no record issues, no anything issues. Even went ahead and used the VocalSync tool, which took all of 30 seconds to figure out.

I have one very minor thing, which has been mentioned by a couple of people, which is that most of the pictures in the ProChannel right-click menu have disappeared. But other than that, I'm sort of quietly astonished.

Same here.

Tips I have for upgraders are.

Don't install Melodyne, Dim Pro, Rapture - Well I haven't and it worked fine just not listed in Command Centre. Well I'd be interested to see what happened with upgraders that did (which case ignore this advise).

Also clear your picture cache.

Look in Sonar Edit-> Preferences and make sure it is all set correctly. The defaults may not take advantage of your system, and your file paths may not be optimal.

What I do (not a one size fits all approach):
Latest ASIO driver and it is selected.
MIDI devices enabled.
Use 64 bit double precision engine = on
Share drivers with other programs = off
Use mulitprocessor engine = on
(I untick the ASIO reported latency settings, some might not think it a good idea).
I turn off the automatic background as I don't need it
I have quadcore so I check ThreadSchedulingModel in the config file section= 2.
I keep an eye on the playback buffers in milliseconds when MIDI goes bad.
I turn off "always echo current MIDI track" as it confuses me.

Oh and I defrag all my drives after an install, and later on I do I full system backup (I have already done one before installation).

Ta..

I didn't install Melodyne...and it was a disaster.  I have MEditor so there
was no need to install Messential.  But, once the install was complete,
MEditor did not show up in either the Region FX or VST list.

So I had to uninstall, rescan, reinstall, and rescan....all was well.
Several others had similar problems.

But, C3 is a good way to go.  Certainly better then downloading and trying to
install, gettting errors, re-downloading, trying to install (from what I've read on
previous releases).  Definitely a much smoother install experience this way.

I installed DimPro and Rapture.  I haven't used them yet, but don't anticipate any problems.  I did not install Melodyne, as I already have a full license.  The VST scanner picket up Melodyne OK.  I used Melodyne a bit and it was all normal.

I did, however crash the system when I did multiple scenes, with one of the scenes including a Melodyne region, so clearly that feature isn't quite solid yet.  The scenes worked OK until I did it with a Melodyne region.

Thanks for the tips! I thought that using 64 Bit double precision engine didn't add anything to the dynamic range.

Appreciate an explanation.

Thanks since I'm still learning.

Yes. I went into preferences > VST settings and did a manual rescan, with "re-scan existing plug-ins" checked. That seemed to fix it.

I'm travelling in SE Asia at present with a laptop.  Not back to Europe for several weeks.  Fearing demise of the intro upgrade offer I thought 'give it a go', cranky guesthouse wi-fi notwithstanding.  Downloaded Platinum overnight via CCC.  Took 7 hours, watching progress meter increment in 100ths of a %. !!  Smooth as a baby's conscience!!!  Installed DimPro, Rapture, Melodyne etc. over about 5 hours the following night.  Worked seamlessly.  Amazing.  Respect for whoever engineered that download manager.  Programme's pretty good so far, too!

Perfect for me as well really impressed. Had problem with AD 2 ADPaks but suspect it was a pilot error on my part.

Apart from that brilliant. Now all I need to do is get my head around Platinum as Sonar 7 was a long way back but I'll get there eventually. Oh opened up some old projects even as far back as Producer 4 and they loaded perfectly. Looking good.

Hi John,

Glad that you had a good experience with Platinum. Regarding the blank PC modules issue the problem only occurs with users who chose to Migrate their settings, due to a small bug in the migration code.

The images that SONAR displays for disabled Prochannel modules are "stand-in" art for modules that gets saved during the scan process. In SONAR Platinum these are stored in this folder:
%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\VSTBitmapCache\SONAR

The above  path is stored in the registry here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR\Cakewalk VST X64
The path string is stored under the "VSTBitmapCachePath" string.
Please let me know what you see in this string on your machine.

The problem is that the migration process ends up copying the entire VST inventory from the prior version of SONAR along with the old path which was:
%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\VSTBitmapCache\SONAR Producer

Additionally since the inventory was up to date after the migration, SONAR doesn't rescan the plugins automatically again. So you can end up with missing cached bitmaps.

Workaround:
As you noticed, re-scanning fixes the problem. If you feel comfortable doing it you can also make sure that the path in the registry key above is %APPDATA%\Cakewalk\VSTBitmapCache\SONAR
If you do this, in the future this won't be an issue. You may need to rescan again after this change. Alternatively you can copy the contents of the "%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\VSTBitmapCache\SONAR Producer" folder to
"%APPDATA%\Cakewalk\VSTBitmapCache\SONAR" which is the new location.

I have already fixed the problem in the code so the next update will have the fix for new users.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: Today's upgrade experience.... 2015/01/29 22:06:25 (permalink)
Ok, so to follow up on this, today I did a fairly punishing ten hour session with a different act from yesterday. Many overdubs over eight different songs, all in a fairly advanced state, all worked up thus far in X3.

All kinds of things in the projects; quite a lot of TruePiano, DimPro and other soft instruments alongside the live stuff. Bits of Melodyne (unbounced), huge array of pug-ins already in use. Fairly varied and complex project files is what I'm batting at. Lots of the Sonar feature set breaking a sweat today.

Anyway, I made the same rule for myself as yesterday; at the first hint of an issue, I'd go back to X3 without the band even noticing, hopefully.

Anyway, absolutely not a hiccup, stutter, crash, missing plug in or anything.

Of course, we could be peevish and say "well, that's how it should be", but anyone who works with computers in an intensive way knows it almost never is like that.

I'll add this: I was initially underwhelmed by the update to AudioSnap, and I still would like to have seen more, but it really is more accurate on transient detection, and definitely less buggy. So it made my life better in a small but very tangible way today.

Ah, and VocalSync is really, really good. We were doing a song that has (counts) 9 different singers layering up the chorus, and mostly left the timing as it was, as that slightly disordered thing is the effect we want. But for any egregious timing issues, VS fixed it in seconds. The way you easily dial in how much precision you want is great. A wonderful piece of super simple but powerful UI design.

I really do sound like a shill now, don't I? I'm not, I'm just really impressed.

Dying to see the Drum Replacer thing. If it's even half as well designed as VocalSync, it'll be an utter joy.

I'm not sure, but I think the Drum Replacer takes advantage of ARA. Maybe someone from Cakewalk could confirm or deny.

Re: Today's upgrade experience.... 2015/01/30 11:29:49 (permalink)
I too have had an easy time moving on to Sonar Platinum. I broke down and did install everything. At first I only installed the things I knew I didn't have. But then I got tired of seeing those red lights. So now everything is green.

Command Center is a great way to install but it does need some more options. Too many users have non default installs and need some leeway in where things are installed. That was one nice thing about the old install process was the detail and options that one had.

Perhaps an advanced option giving back those abilities would be in the next CC update.

As to Sonar Platinum, it is fabulous! Solid and very stable. People have already talked about all the great new features so I wont comment except to say they are right. I don't know what new feature I like the most but the custom control bar module ranks high.

All in all a very nice experience. One huge benefit of the new CC is that you don't have to install everything on the first day.  I like the idea of it checking for updates each time it starts.

Now where is that Sonar Platinum user manual?

Best

Well my first opinions were positive. Then it kept crashing, I was getting pretty angry about it....

Then I found out it was my hardware that needed tweaking and the OS....
Now I must remember this because exactly the same thing happened when X3 came out.

After returning to Sonar after a few years I was full of great expectations and hopes. After only a few hours in Platinum I am finding that simple operations on other daws appear to be more complicated than I suspected in Sonar. Only 1 crash but sorry to say I have been years without any.

Not moaning, not trolling but honestly not impressed up to now. Having said that a day is not enough time to either get used to a new DAW or indeed review it. So I go forward hoping that I can grow to love it but also extremely glad I chose the monthly payment rather than pay the full amount as at least I can opt out with very little cost if after a month I am not convinced.

Those who can't dance always blame the band.

Anyway, absolutely not a hiccup, stutter, crash, missing plug in or anything.

This is going to sound weird, but...when I read that, all of a sudden I realized that I haven't had any crashes or stutters or issues either. I just didn't think about it.

The current project I'm working on was a live recording at CES, three hours' worth of material spread over 3 days where I'm culling the best performances. So the project is managing about 6GB of material, and some of the edits are pretty detailed to replace tech glitches from one night with a good section from a different night.

I'm not using any virtual instruments, and only 2-3 plug-ins per track along with ProChannel modules; there are only about 10 tracks where I shuffle the data around, so one level the project isn't that intense. However, I haven't worked with that much data in a project before.

I'm working on a song concurrently that has about 24 tracks, tons of plug-ins, multiple virtual instruments, and quite a bit of Melodyne processing and it's also been perfect. But I've only put in about 3 hours on that since getting Platinum. The other one is probably about 15-20 hours.

I'm sure I'll figure out some way to crash SONAR, but so far so good.

I had a couple of "white outs" on the 1st couple of tests with Platinum,  but none since I first got started.  I always feel software and hardware and operator have to get to know each other a little.

I also picked up Z3ta +2 and have to say that is one great softsynth.  I should have upgraded that long ago.

I already have the full standalone AD2 and all ADpaks except 4 of them.. should I install the AD2 that came with Platinum to collect 3 more ADpaks? Will this screw up my current installation?
