They offered $7,500 reward for the guitars of estimated value of $100,000.

    Pffft. Cheapskates.

Side note: The security guard only got $250. Obviously not a businessman.

Photos of the stolen guitars here, on the band's website. Heartbreaking, indeed.

The un-named hero of this story is the person who recognized the pawned guitar. Probably some average Joe guitar player who happened to wander into the pawnshop that day, and also happened to know his celebrity guitars. I hope he gets the reward. And spends it on a vintage guitar. He'd have a great story to go along with it.

JB: yeh, "heartbreaking" may be too strong, given that they were recovered. In fact, Petty had already replaced the SG and the Rickenbacker the same day the guitars were reported stolen. If you've got the cash, no guitar is so rare that it cannot be replaced.

I still miss my '67 blonde Rickenbacker. It wasn't stolen, though; I sold it to someone. Someone I thought would play it and appreciate it. Little did I know he simply turned around and re-sold it for 3x the price he paid me. I got some small satisfaction when he confided that he'd sold it too soon because today it would be worth 10x or 12x the price he gave me.

Music stores and pawn shops can actually be very helpfull in identifying and reporting suspi cious gear. THey don't often get any credit for that. As repair guy I often get emails from stores giving the heads up about stolen gear. I do the same if I see something that's not right.

In this case the only thing that surprized me was the inflated valuation for those guitars. The broadcaster was the most valuable and would fetch 30k - 45k depending on the condition. People with vintage collections have lost about 50% of their value since 2008 and are working hard to "talk up" the value to prevent big losses if they have to sell.
