Tom Scholz: Sound Machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYXgfzVjrTw#t=439

As is, it's sort of a big teaser because they could have gone so much deeper. But it's fun to watch, anyway.

Thanks, Rain. I enjoyed that. I recently read "Instant: The Story of Polaroid", which doesn't mention Tom but describes a company designed by its founder to be an environment where smart people are encouraged to think, dream and invent. A lot of musicians are employed there still.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Note that your video link starts towards the end (that "t" portion at the end).  So remember to rewind before watching!

I hate when it does that - I think that's the point where I switched from the linked video in another page directly to YouTube, because I wanted to share it...  :/

When you click on the "Share" tab, you're given a choice of copying the share link from where you are or the beginning.

You don't want to grab the main URL either.

i bought a rockman, way back when....
was it 1982?

i still have it somewhere.
have some demos recorded with it.....

the cleans on it were really nice...
and i liked the distortion without the chorus effect....
but found that every single track ended up sounding the same using this thing.
same eq, same sonic fingerprint.

but at the time, it was like a magic miniature studio.

actually, the best of all the products he put out, was the Distortion Generator.

run that, into a programmable EQ, and you are really onto something.

I used to have a Rockman too, so much fun!  But, I made the mistake of storing it with the battery (batteries?) still in it and they exploded...

So you know where the batteries go in a Rockman, but not in every Boss pedal ever made...

A buddy of mine had one but I can't remember much about it. Listening to a couple of videos on YouTube, I do recognize the sound however.

Joe Satriani must have used that thing on Surfing with the Alien, did he? That's THAT sound pretty much exactly.

Pretty incredible device for the time.

Just to be able to walk around playing guitar with distortion while wearing headphones.  Kids now-a-days have NO idea how innovative that was at the time!

Ah, 1985...

Never owned one, but the older brother of a friend had one and let me play with that and his priceless Gibson flying V for an entire afternoon.

Heaven on earth. :)

I had one called a Hot Watt back in '83 or 84'. Road trips were great. Just sit in the back seat and get lost in the sound... :)

Back on topic.

Regardless of his business success I really do find it hard to believe that a wizard like that could not "get the sound" he was after out of stock devices*.

well, remember, the first album, was a marshall, with his tweaks all in front of the amp.

the first album, was a real amp.
he used a prototype of the POWER SOAK (another scholz device i bought and used).

after that, it sounds mushy to me.

Interesting!  Boy do I remember after their debut album came out waiting and waiting and waiting for their next one and then REALLY wanting a third to come out which also took forever...

Their latest album, which just came out, took 11 years(!) to complete and even that still includes three songs that were on the previous album but just remixed...  Oh, and the drums are fake and sound like it!  Oh well...

I'd never been a fan of Boston - I was too young for their first albums and by the time I started buying records, they were much too pop for my tastes.

I'm finding out that I do like that guy and, from checking their stuff out on iTunes, their first album definitely has its place in my CD collection.

I got the link from Bobby Owsinski's weekly newsletter, which is one of the very few newsletters worth reading imho.

Both the first album and the second album (Don't Look Back) are above and beyond.  After that it's a matter of picking and choosing with some songs and/or albums, as with most bands that have been around a long time, being somewhat forgettable.
