TonePort KB37 - Anybody else using it?

I am using a Toneport KB37 USB setup to record my music now. I also have a BossBR1600cd -"Which I haven't done much of nothing with but use the GT6 effects from to record with since I got this new TONEPORT KB37 setup".

I also have purchased PODFARM and FXJUNKIE/METAL plugins for it.

I was wondering if anybody else out there is using a similiar setup to record with?

I was previously using an M-Audio 2496 sound card, going out of my BossBr1600cd SPDIF into the SPDIF connections of the M-Audio Card, although I had multiple probs., which I was doing that to record 24 BIT, and decided to go this route instead of using a sound card.No probs recording 24 bit, except when trying to record vocals.

I Know a lot of people might ask "Why don't you just record on the BossBR1600cd" - The reason why is I've learned how to use the software that I have been using "MC4" and don't feel like re-reading a 300 page book to re-learn recording. I guess I'm talking about what they call WORK FLOW.

Any advice or thoughts are welcomed on this setup.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, I'm kinda stuck with it now. Anyway I have it all optimized for recording music. "Everything seems to be working fine up until I try and record vocals".

For VOX I have a MXIV67 Condenser Microphone, and I also have a Directional Microphone.

The thing is, I have tried recording two different ways so far :

1st : "I've used the Directional Microphone and the PODFARM VST Plugin with the PRE-VOCAL settings", plugging the DIRECTIONAL Microphone directly into the TONEPORT KB37. This seemed to work out great.

2nd Attempt: "I Used the headphone out plug from the BOSS BR1600CD and using the built in VOCAL effects from the boss, going into the TONEPORT KB37 LINE INPUTS". I was using a DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE then also, but the result was it really turned out bad.

Everytime I try and use the Condenser Microphone eitherway I just can't seem to get the volume I need without overloading my daw, it sounds so far away. I am using PHANTOM POWER ALSO 48+ turned on, but only with the Condenser Microphone.

Anyone who uses this USB setup that has any advice, thank you in advance! Recording the VOX has been a pain for me, it's either too close or too distant. Doesn't seem to matter what I do with my volume adjustments, I can't seem to figure this out.

In the end, if I do get it figured out : "Wouldn't I be better off using the Condenser Microphone as opposed to the Directional Microphone"?

All at the same time, I feel I have more control with the Directional Microphone. At the end of the recording though, better results is what I am looking for. So should I keep working with the Condenser Mic. or the Directional Mic. ???

Sorry, this is a long message, but I have tons of questions.

I use the KB37. I'm not sure why you are having any issues recording vocals. I plug my condenser mic into it, switch on the phantom power, and pull up a preamp in the Line6 models and tweak away til I hear what I'm looking for. I've also used a dynamic mic for recording an amp. For that, I bypass the amp models and other stuff in the software. That means I'm just using the KB37 as an interface/soundcard.

Metalman - I am using similar gear as you so I'll just explain what is working for me. Maybe you can get some ideas:

After my own research on the subject of recording Vocals, I chose a large diaphram condenser (ksm27). This mic requires phantom power. I'm plugging into a Toneport and setting the input gain on the Toneport to 9 or 9.5. The toneport should be equivalent to your kb37. I record completely dry using ASIO Gearbox (send 3 and 4 - actually I record mono using send 3). I am monitoring with a Gearbox pre-amp and effects send 1 and 2. I have to stay about 4" to 6" away from the mic when singing. With this setup I get a wave form that does not clip - which is the most important. From there I put Pod Farm in the effects bin using one of the vocal Pre-amps as the first thing in the signal chain. I get good results.

Thanks Randy, you answered my question. The problem has been "I haven't recorded many vocals at all with this setup" or with my previous setup, and to be honest with you it didn't occur to me to build my own setup with Pod farm. I have been trying the vocal presets, only one of them was loud enough for me to use even after changing the settings with the models, I should mention that I don't have pod farm platinum, just a couple add ons for pod farm and it's very limited for vocals.

I done what you were talking about and pulled up a pre-amp and started from there and it was like I just went to a hearing specialist and got my hearing back again! I'm not a singer, that might explain a few things, and don't know much about recording vocals at all.

    Thanks again!

Thanks guitartrek, this explains a lot of my problems. I don't know a lot about vocal effects. I'm very happy with recording guitars and bass, but I went back to my boss effects for those "Mainly so I don't have to use much computer power right now", besides I like the sounds also, that may change when I get a new computer in the future with more power, or when I learn more.

    Thanks again,

    Bobby
