Middleman I like the chord wheel function. That could add some creative movement to something when your brain is tired. I play piano but sometimes the creative engine is on park and I need to get something done. That's a handy feature. Yes it is nice and it's nice to throw an extension or an alternate chord in to hear how it might sound. Especially when you don't have the skills to pull it off yourself.

You can also see a little bit of this in P5 and Kinetic in that they both have a library where you can drag or drop parts. Perhaps if they had developed this a bit further those products might have been more successful. Cakewalk had the same thing in Studio Instruments but they never fully develop some products and just let them wither and die on the vine. The biggest thing will be library support. It's like EZdrummer Pop/Rock EZX - the midi files were very basic and quantized to the point of being a bit sterile. But now Toontrack has really dialed in the process of getting both good sounding drum samples and tasty groove libraries to match. I think that with time EZK will be the same.

I think this looks like a very useful plugin, and at this point I think the expansions are going to be the key to it's success. EG: Organs, Clav, Electric Piano's (ie: Wurlitzer, Rhodes, etc...), Accordion (traditional, cajun, americana "a la Mellencamp"), etc... Even outside standard keyboard thinking, such as Strings, Horns, etc... I'm not likely to use something like this for building songs around, hooks or solo's - but I think it would be great to drop in accompany parts - especially for those of us that are not accomplished keyboard players.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! I tried a simialar product that was supposed to sound like a strummed guitar. Now I'm playing the darned guitar myself. I was either underwelmed or over dissappointed I'm not sure which. I realize this is a different product, but like oldpal said it depends on those midi files and if the midi doesn't fit your thang then it probably isn't a good fit. Are keys players really in that short of supply? I guess since I play keys I didn't realize the shortage was there. I am known to be both a slow adopter and stubborn,so in the spirit of good will, I hope someone somewhere might maybe use it someday. I can't see it being any use to me...different strokes ya know :)

Interesting and with EzBass and EzGuitar registered they could be going the whole hog. I'm certainly interested in the chord generator side of it and how that could work. I get fed up looking in my big book of piano chords; not being a pianist/keyboard player.

Working like a champ here. The chord generator is a very handy feature. I've already built a piano bed track for a song I am working on. One thing I haven't discovered how to do - When using a MIDI clip you can't always split it where you need to. As an example I need to have the 4 chord on two beats of a measure then the 5 on the last to beats. Haven't figured out how to split a measure in the song construction window of EZKeys. The smallest split I can see it making is one full measure. Hopefully ModBod will be along to clarify. Sorry for the big ol' paragraph but I'm using Firefox.

I got it all installed properly and I've changed my mind...it is very interesting. I had to look in the manual to find where the chord selector was - and that made all the difference. ***** For splitting just select the scissors tool and zoom in - I just created a 16th note chop up of an entire measure so you can definitely get there pdlstl...

I think I get what Toontrack is thinking with this. The midi files provide the percussive nature of the piano parts. Ignore the chords and even the progressions of the midi files and just find a percussive match or compliment to your song part. Drag it in the timeline and then open the chord selector to alter each chord in the midi file. It is like ezdrummer but with an extra layer - a note or chord selection layer - to accommodate the fact that this is a piano player (percussion *and* melodic) and not just a drummer (percussion only). Very, very smart on the part of these Toontrack guys. And lot's of fun to mess with - for a guitar player like me with limited piano skills. That's pretty much it - another ez-out for songwriters. I'm sure more midi packs are in the works - and I'll get some I'm sure.

That's what I did as well. Found a sequence I liked, drug it into the song window and began changing the chords to what I needed. There was one spot that put two wrong notes in but I was able to change it to the correct ones and it sounded great.

As stated above, the more packs created the more useful the product will be. Heck I'd be happy if quality players would just start recording "classic" songs with piano in them. Then we could say I want that "Just The Way It Is" feel from Bruce Hornsby (without that annoying compressed piano) but with my chord progression. Kind of a Jamstix for piano thang, roight? Then it will be even more perfect for a non-piano/keys player like me.

@ timidi - I couldn't agree more. I've been building client drum and bass tracks for years and I can only see this going forward. Superior has given me the capability to produce drum tracks that most mid level drummers just are not capable of. Same with the Scarbee bass tools from NI. And my clients pay me the same amount as if the had to bring a player.

Been playing with it for about an hour now and I like it. Alot. Given that you can change the chords and such it is a great tool. I just hope they come out with a ton of midi packs for it in different styles and faster than they have for the drums. I play keys but I could use a ton of practice. Most of what I do is one handed stuff or single note lines and I can pull that type of thing off great but if I want to get into something groove oriented or in a style that I am not familiar with then I tend to sink. This gives me the chance to find the right groove and just go with it. I can already hear all sorts of stuff opening up with EZ Keys.

Good to see that you guys are excited about the product. I'm still learning how to use it myself and I'm chopping up the TT midi files and saving them in folders in my Favorites window. Did you guys catch that you can right click on a groove and use the "find in browser" feature to tell where it came from? This is handy in your Favorites folders to find where you got a groove. I am going to start working on variations and then dropping them into folders that will relate to the stock folders. I too would love to see some of our accomplished keyboardists put together collections of comps and licks. Especially longer measures of the same chord with variations to keep it interesting. I'd buy them for sure.
