Top 30 VST plugins

I stumbled onto this list of the top 30 vst plugins, as voted on by musicradar.com readers. You may not agree with all of them, which makes it a fun read and maybe fuel for discussion. While you're there, check out the top 20 soft synths and the top 13 free vst plugins

If you're too lazy to click the links, I'll give you the short version...

#1 plugin: Ozone (runner-up: Guitar Rig)
#1 synth: Omnisphere (runner-up: Zebra)
#1 freebie: TAL-Noisemaker (runner-up: Green Oak Crystal)

Thanks for this.  Enjoyed reading it.

I was surprised that Scuffham Amps did not even make the list of top11 Amp sims; I know it is a boutique type sim, but it is the best one trick pony I have played/riden/seen.

Well, I'm happy to have Guitar rig 5 with my new Komplete 8, [except for the price tag], it provides a lot of effects coverage, and it will be beneficial for when I eventually get OT Evolution guitar... and I certainly am ever pleased with Omnisphere.

    Re:Top 30 VST plugins 2012/04/14 10:07:50 (permalink)
Anyone check out the top 14 vst drums? What do you think about Battery as #1? Or EZDrummer ranking higher than BFD? Or Steven Slate Drums not making the list?

Another related list: top 15 DAWs. Surely there's some controversy there, with SONAR coming it at #4, behind Reaper, Ableton, Fruity Loops and Logic.

How about the 11 plugins you can't live without...curiously, many of the top 30 from the previous list are not on this list. If Ozone is the best vst plugin in the world, why did it not make the list of plugins responders "can't live without"?  Is it very good but just not essential?

Let's hear your list of the plugins you'd most hate to part with. Here's mine, based on which ones are most likely to appear in any of my projects:
    1. SPAN
    2. Pro-Q
    3. Kontakt
    4. SampleTank/Miroslav
    5. ValhallaRoom
    6. Channel Tools

Ozone doesn't make my list because even though it's a favorite, I have suitable alternatives and could therefore adapt to life without it. Same with Omnisphere: love it but it's not essential.

My philosophy is that every plugin you have does more than you think it does.

Spending time learning every nuance of the tools at hand is more cost-effective than spending money every week on shinier versions of the same tools you already own.

Back in the day, Geoff Emerick and Alan Parsons didn't have The Glue, or Ozone, or Pro-whatever, or even a computer. Heck, Parsons still doesn't understand computers to this day. It should be obvious that no plugin is the secret key to anything. If your song sucks, it isn't for lack of some plugin (despite protestations to the contrary from the marketing machines).

My pockets are already turned inside out after purchasing Komplete 8. Most of us have to make careful selective choices about what we purchase and how it will benefit our style of music and our strategic approach to making it.

Good research, critical reviews and personal advice on these forums can help sort it all out. Nevertheless, as Bitflipper points out, we really need to dig deep into the software that we have to exploit and realize its ultimate potential. Most of us haven't even scratched the bare surface of the hardware and software potentiality that we already have.

Creativity and innovation are always the most important assets at our disposal, regardless of the software that we use, because their is no replacement or alternative for real talent and hard work.

I have a lot of the plugs on this list. And some that need to be on there which aren't. I didn't see Izotope RX? I'm trying to get better at using them, and the whole "mixing process..." I'm good at everything else? I have no excuse for producing anything but an awesome mix. So my mixes from now on? Well, prepare to kiss my ring. And I'm talking about the one on my finger.

Favourite synth even though I'm a bit of a rocker is Sylenth. Cracking plug-in that captures a whole genre effortlessly. It raised the standard and Zebra, which I don't have, has taken over for a lot of users. Omnisphere is remarkable along with trillian/trilogy. Kontakt is great, as is most of Komplete and Toontrack drums gets a hammering. I like Guru and SSD too.

Favourite freebie synth is Synth1 with it's amazing preset library. Voxengo Span is a permanent fixture in the plug-in department.

All the guitar plug-ins have their moments. Scuffham and AdrenaLinn Sync are fun too. Ozone is a good all-in-one tool as is Alloy.

The secret is to buy what you need and what you'll use and then there is no real favourites as they all have their place. Alternatively you can buy everything and you're never left wondering what X or Y is like or whether you need or will use it.

For plug-ins I'm sure things will change now that I have much more CPU power. I can finally use the Pro channel more and other native plugs that my old system was not up to the task. I've been mostly using my DSP cards for most of the processing. With a few exceptions.

For synths, EZ drummer and Jamstix for drums, other instruments: Miroslav Philharmonic, EWQL Gypsy and RA and Garratins JABB3.
Processing so far has mostly been Focusrite Liquid Mix. TC poco CL-1, Fabrik-C, Megaverb and 24/7 that's TC's version of the 1176
Software amps TC thirty and Tubifex. If I had enough CPU to run native. Amplatube Fender or GR4.
UAD plugs. 1176, LA2A,Harrison EQ, Cambridge EQ and dimension D (I'll have to wait until I can do that upgrade before I can use my UAD plugs again, no available PCI slot.)
Reverbs, reverberate or Megaverb on a few channels and TC's VSSR on the main reverb buss.
SSL Duende Buss compressor on the main buss.
Favorite free plugs Ferric TDS and G-clip. Those Kjaerhus free plugs are really cool too just haven't used them in some time.
