Top plugs you've bought that's just collecting dust?

Hey!

SvenArne wrote a post about Drumplugs we dont use. I'm stealing the theme of that thread because it made me curious about what plugs (both effects and instruments) you guys have bought and in the end you turned out not using.

1. Waves PAZ. This one absolutely tops the list for me. I think I tested it a couple of times, max. I really wanted the plug a couple of years ago and waited for ages for a sale but still paid overprice for it (as most of Waves stuff even with sale prices..) The plug just didnt fit me at all. It felt kind of sluggish and I didnt like how stuff was presented. It just felt like a really old plug. I think that one definitively tops my list. I now use Melda Multianalyser wich approximately is 1000+ times better.

2. Applied Acoustics Chromaphone. Dont get me wrong. This one is a good synth. But I just dont use it much. And I CRAVED for that synth for months.

3. BFD ECO. Number of times used=1. Nough said.

    Interesting topic...

Waves SSL. I haven't taken the time to sort out the channel strips productively and I usually prefer the IK SSL comp over the Waves SSL comp...

I know I just need to spend more time with it - maybe over the holiday weekend. :)

Also Slate Virtual Buss Compressors. I have too many compressors, and none of these have unseated what I already have.

Thankfully I haven't spent a dime on a plugin thus far. But a lot of synths and tools came packaged with Sonar Studio that I don't even know exist (I'm looking at you, ProChannel)

I pulled Waves from the mix; blah! Got tired of watching the "W" turn
BFD Eco: I got this for like $20 I think.
I tried installing to the "Cat"; I don't know what I did wrong, but the install went sideways.
I rolled back to the image I burned prior to install.
Anyone want the Waves or Eco?

Yeah, what Waves? For all the grief they get for being overpriced and prior issues with authorization, they are still remarkably musical plugins that really work well in many situations. I'm not too thrilled about their new celebrity plugins because they aren't really anything special, you're buying the presets. But the core plugins are really solid.

Everything Waves. Lots of "cinematic" sample libraries (although if I ever score a sci-fi horror film I'll be glad I have them). Session Drummer. Almost every free synth I've ever downloaded. AAS String Studio. RP Delay (it's popular but I don't know why). Wusik 4000. True Piano Amber. D16 Devastor. Boost11. TS64 Transient Shaper.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I use most of the stuff I've got...even if only sporadically.  But, as with Bit, Wusik...which I got on some convoluted group buy thingy...has only been used maybe twice.  As to plugins I do have one which has a terrible price/usage ratio.  It was very expensive and I only need to use it rarely.  That said I wouldn't be without it:  Flux Trax.

Ol' pal, you are braver'n me for asking!

I wondered the same thing. But I stared at Waves longingly from a distance for years before I felt I was "ready" for them. Maybe that taints my perception, but I really like my Waves plugs...

Plug ins themselves are OK - the company and it's business practices STINK! Even though I own some very expensive waves plug ins I cannot use them properly as I refuse to pay them WUP just so they will work. I had an extremely bad experience with Waves re GTR which when released WOULD not work as advertised - 100%their problem and they admitted this - eventually they released a version that did work but insisted on charging me to upgrade my version that DID NOT WORK. Pretty scummy and I would say deal with them at you peril.

I agree with Bitflipper on the R.P delay, I got it in a deal but never used it. AAS string studio is another that's been mentioned, I never found a use for it.

discounting libraries, most of the stuff I have gets used from time to time. I certainly have a few Kontakt libraries that never get used and I really do not know why I bought the No 1 Hits Ezx.

Gotcha...agree the WUP sucks (have only had to use it once to step up to the next version) but also agree the plugs don't.  That's what I was thinkin was the problem with them.  Although they seem to have kind of had the scales fall from their eyes in the last couple of years what with all the sales and all and the new proprietary cloud license.  Anywhoo, just curious.

Waves Tune: I think I paid $50.  I tried and tried but couldn't seem to get a handle on that one.

I'm not an engineer but if I were I'd think it would be beneficial to be at least familiar with waves plugins.  I would assume if you were working outside your own studio you would find waves to be dominant.

Exactly.  While I don't have any hard data, I'd bet that Waves has sold more plugins than anybody else, and by a wide margin.  If you work with others in the business, it's a good idea to know your Waves.

On the topic of dust-gathering, most such tools in my folder are things that came with bundles.  I bought the Nomad Integral bundle a while ago for cheap, and while I'm glad to have it -- it has some stuff that I really like -- most of the 50 or so plugins never get used.  Same goes for several of the Melda plugs ... when I want to do something specific, I rarely reach for MMultiBandAutoDynamicLimiterEQLargeWithEndlessWaysToTweak.

    90% of them.

As a matter of fact, on my most recent mixes, the only 3rd party plugs I used were... Waves.

EQ and Compression are the two things I use the most - and most of the time I use my native plugs for that. Occasional exception for EQ - IK's Pultec.
Occasional exception for Compression - IK's Fairchild (though I'm getting better at dialling what I want using the VariMU mode of Logic's comp), Waves CLA compressors.

Others - IK's British Channel, and, even more rarely, reverbs - Lexicon, IK's CSR and Valhalla.

Most used/essential 3rd party: Waves tape emulations and L1. That's the only ones I've been using lately.

Which is why I guess I have had my plug-in acquisition syndrome well under control for a while. I'm only getting stuff that my basic set of plug-ins don't cover, which isn't a lot. EQ's and compressions don't really interest me, nor reverbs.

My UAD-2 Solo card has actually been collecting a bit of dust lately. I try to depend on UAD less and less because the way they're going, I'll barely be able to run a single instance of their next line of plugs on my Solo. I also don't like how they keep replacing the trusted old plugs (LA2A, 1176, Pultec etc.) with new versions requiring 10x the DSP power for 5% more authenticity. Before I know it the "legacy" versions won't even be supported no more!

The only UAD plug I can't live without is the Precision De-esser. I've just never tried one that comes close!

Since I didn't upgrade to UAD2, my whole UAD1 account including:
    Big Neve 88RS Channel Strip
    DreamVerb Room Modeler
    Precision Enhancer kHz
Which I'm trying to sell to a happy UAD2 home.....

    Wusik Station
AAS String Studio (still trying to find a use for it)
    BFD Eco
A couple of the D16 Silverline bundle (Devastator is one of em)

I'm sure there's a bunch more, but I can't remember as they've been collection dust.

Crysonic, I can't even remember what the plug-in was called. It never worked right, that I remember, and the company was less than helpful.

    Some are just plain obsolete:
    LiveSynthPro
VSampler 3.5 (paid for the upgrade from VS3 included in Sonar 3)
    Cameleon

Some I just don't use anymore:
Pristine Space Light - I like it better with Cakewalk's GUI.
    TAL U-NO-LX
Ultra Analog VA-1 - The GUI is way too small to work with.
discoDSP Vertigo - I used to like this one but not so much anymore.

Yeah whats with all these small GUI's? Especially now when 4k displays are getting more and more common. Thankfully my newfound love (the Melda Plugins) lets ju scale the gui to your liking.

Reverbs. I still slap my face as to why I bought several. Expensive, schoolboy error but it was in the past and you are allowed to make the odd mistake early on.
