On most Drum packages (EZD2, SD2, BFD...etc) the pitch controls seem to me to be only marginally useful as they change the overall character of the drum along with changing the pitch up or down. You have very little leeway up or down before the drum starts sounding unnatural. Torque seems to have overcome this...at least in the video demo. It seems to retain the original character even when making pretty significant pitch alterations. Plus it seems to add a fatness when pitching down and a snappiness when pitching up. Plus Butch Vig likes it. So, I'm probably doomed.

I'm finding the same thing. Also when I tuned the kick down, I had an idea to throw Low Air after Torque. Interesting!! Not liking it too much on a drum buss, but individual drums works great! I say I don't like it on a drum buss, but it would depend on what your going for. What I got did not sound bad, just not what I was going for. Having said that, the potential for morphing sound is tremendous! Think, not only drums!!

Looks like Eventide's Fission plugin does the same thing. It allows you to split a sound into its transient and tonal parts, independently manipulate them using Eventide's world-class effects and then fuse them back together.
Torque is a lot more affordable. Edit: Torque seems to be aimed specifically at drums and video demo is impressive. Fission is also pitched (pun intended) as a broader FX engine.

That guy is a musical hero of mine. A little kid, I used to listen to my mother's copy of The Beach Boys Today over and over. I discovered Pet Sounds in college in the early 90's - that album changed my life. I finally got to see him live last year in Nashville - he is only a shell of a human now. What an amazing catalog of hits though...

I wondered if it's worth my time. Seems like a no-brainer. Although soundshifter is reasonable enough for tuning a drum sample on a constant basis. Deliberated whether it is worth it from a non-percussionist point of view. I do have projects where I use acoustic drum samples however is this one trick pony. Will it work for orchestral percussion or just certain types. Going to download the manual and make a decision.
