Totally removing silence

I am working on a side project that involves editing spoken recordings. My problem is that some of the recorded speakers speak very slowly, with long pauses between words. Is there any way within Sonar 2.0 (or an associated plug in) to totally remove the silence between the words and then automatically move the split clips so that there is no space or time inbetween them?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with a plugin to do what you describe. And I don't recall if Sonar 2 can do slip editing or not--Sonar 3 and 4 can. Slip editing could let you slice and dice your audio data to do what you're describing but it would be tedious if there are a lot of breaks that have to be eliminated.

Another option similar to slip editing is to use an external audio editor to accomplish the same thing--manually delete silent spaces. I have Sound Forge that I use for editing like this. If you don't have an audio editor you could try out the free Audacity, or the shareware Goldwave.

this is very easy in soundforge - just "remove silence".

in sonar 2 - you can slip edit - or just delete the sections with no speech and drag the wavs together. you could crossfade the edges or fade them in and out to avoid clicks / pops.

I'm doing the same kind of work....editing a long interview. I didn't delete the holes when deleting unwanted sections of recording so that I could use the markers. Now I have lots of bits of dialog with empty spaces. The only way I can figure out to get rid of them is to select and move the audio on the right over to the left. Am I missing something?
Thanks. It would seem that there should be a faster way.
Editing in Wavelab using "delete silence" doesn't work because there is natural silence in the pauses between talking that I want to keep.

I do not know about sonar 2.0 my copy is packed up but look to see if Process-Audio-Remove Silence is available. I believe there is a split clips box to check. I don't know how well it works.

What remains after you "totally remove silence"?

I understand what you are talking about doing but I've never found an automated process for this that works right. First and formost is the problem with cadence or timing of the vocal phrases. Just erasing silence and pushing all the pieces together creates a fuddled mess as far as I'm concerned. I think I've tried this once or twice in the past and swore I'd never bother again.

If anyone knows of a technique that actually works - please let us know! I have no other solution other than rolling your sleeves up and doing the bit level surgery. Wish I had a better answer. It can take a long time to weed through hours of dialog. I've edited whole audio books this way. Not fun

Have to agree with Larry here. To get a natural sounding read you're just going to have to go through your file and carefully edit out the silent gaps. That ol box can't do everything for ya

If you "remove silence" and then time compress it you'll achieve the same effect the disclaimer ads use for contests or car sales on radio spots!
