If your going to do it, the setup I've seen work best is two monitors, one touch one standard.  Make sure the touch monitor can angle at least 45deg away from you.  This is your "control surface", and your second monitor is your main viewing screen.

I had a setup like this on my old Samsung laptop, unfortunately it died on me.  I went to HP and I can't angle the screen past 90%, hence I rarely use the touch screen.

When I had that setup, I loved it.  You can fly through the project page with a swipe of a finger, and have more of a "console feel" to your mixing.

I intend on going back to this eventually.

    I use one. It's fun. :-)

I use it mostly when recording or setting up a mix.

I am a fairly precise mixer when it comes to final mixdowns and I use envelopes a lot. Touch is not the greatest for modifying envelopes.

When adjusting effects, they can jump around. If you are the type that often holds shift to get values to change very slowly, touch isn't going to be much fun.

When I hook up a second monitor, it gets finger prints. The whole thing about having one touch and one not touch I think is more b/c people want to keep using their existing monitor. You certainly can, but I have resisted buying another monitor that isn't touch. I just bring in a TV from somewhere in the house when I want 2 screens. I plan on another touch screen, but I haven't purchased yet.

You really don't need the most expensive touch screen to work with Sonar. I got one that was like $700! Totally unnecessary. At the time, it talked about swipes from the sides and stuff but, in Sonar, none of that matters. Any screen will do.

I totally recommend it if you have cash and want to get a sense of it. I'd never by another controller. I'd only buy another screen. You can use it as a keyboard! How cool.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I've got a dell 23 incher.  Too small, tho it works for many things - esp. synths

I've got a HP 27-inch all in one but the screen is like the dell so you can swing it from flat to vertical.  Nicer, but you still can't edit well, but is very nice as another controller, just like your mouse and keyboard (and music keyboard).

It is not the end all, mother of all methods of control.  Just another one that excels at some functions, not the others.  Kinda like a tv remote where you have to use the arrows to move around a grid of letters to "search" for a show.  Otherwise, it is the bees knees, but it fails in that aspect.  Like typing w/ a mouse.

yes.  But you need a great big old screen if you plan on doing faders so they are almost life-sized.

Mine is also 23 ten point. I would add TH3 as a useful place to use it. Synths. Console view.

I ended up with a dell 23" touch screen, I have it set on an angle around 45 degrees and set up as my primary screen since it is a nice piece, secondary is my laptop screen 17", and a third 22" screen, very functional setup right next to my VS-700 console.
