Tout for FabFilter "Mikro" when mixing...
When mix engineers are seeking to clean up and tighten a mix they quite often use a simple locut/hi-pass filter on many if not most tracks. You can, of course, do this with whatever equalizer you're using already on any given track to greater or lesser effect but I prefer to simply add an instance of FabFilter Mikro which is a single filter which can be configured either hi or lo pass on each track and, when mixing, lo cut to taste. It's very CPU friendly and tres easy to use. It's also cheap. In fact if you already own some FF stuff...really cheap. Check it out.

I'm a bit puzzled about these type of plug-ins. I own the free Brainworx Cleransweep, which is basically just a hi pass, and McDSP F2 but I can't for the life of me figure out why I'd use that instead of my regular 8 bands Logic EQ or Renaissance EQ on which I can only enable only the band (s) that I need. Furthermore, though I do put a hi pass on basically everything, I'm likely to add a notch or dip somewhere else, so I'll be dealing w/ 2 plug-ins instead of one, which seems counterproductive. Am I missing something?

I have all the Fabfilters except mikro. Hopefully I'm covered already with all the eq and filters I need, for now. Yoro is the fabman, though, and I think he's got a plug or two of some kind for every day of the year if he needs it to put a cork in some renegade piece of bandwidth.

@Rain...your Cleansweep should work equally as well. And yes, there is a noticeable difference. @pathos...(great avatar) Yossarian thought Orr was crazy in the beginning too;-)

A good progressive and adjustable HPF/LPF is invaluable, many included with broad band EQ's are not up to the task, this looks like a great recommendation to me. Thanks 'olpal.

Thanks for the kind words McQ:-) But all that stuff on MS is gettin pretty long in the tooth. I'm currently rotating mixes up to my soundcloud page from my new album project to test their "web readiness". Put a new up yesterday called "Already Gone". http://soundcloud.com/tracks/search?q%5Bfulltext%5D=doghouse+riley I'll post in songs as well. DR

Love "Swizzle Stick" and "already Gone" . Nice eq--I can hear every instrument and vocal--each has its own space in the mix--have nice polished tone, with good dynamics, yet still full and loud enough. Me likey. Out of curiosity, what piano are you using when it comes in at 3 minutes into "Already gone?"

That's actually the True Stereo Piano from my Alesis QS8 controller. It's the only sound from the QS8 I use in projects and, even though I have so many other great pianos "inside" the box...which I do use quite a bit...I have a long time personal preference and attachment for that piano sound. It cuts through a mix very well...works great for rock and boogie stuff. I'll probably listen through that song with other pianos just to see if one fits better. But I could live with it now with no problems. It really is one of my "guilty pleasures";-)

@ Yoropal: Do you, in your opinion, believe that a filter plug like Volcano is adequate, or do you still recommend Micro?

Oh Volcano is definitely more than adequate. But I use Volcano differently than a normal "eq". I use it for more "filtering FX" kind of stuff. While it is true that with a proper full featured linear phase eq...like ProL, for instance, one can "clean up the low end" very nicely and still have plenty of "tweakability" for overall tenor and tone of the instrument being worked on. However, the ability to have a separate simple hi pass filter can be very helpful. Again, I'd suggest anyone try this technique themselves to "hear" the difference. Get your eq like you want it and then, while listening to the full mix, insert a simple hi pass filter at the head of your chain and adjust to taste. It can really make a difference.

This is something that I've never tried before. Thanks Yorolpal. If I understand you correctly, you just use Micron for the simplicity and direct use of it to get a single task done quickly and easily. Micron would actually only cost me a mere fourteen dollars, with my discount.

I'm still trying to figure out whether it's you or bapu that has the biggest case of GAS hehe some of the stuff (like the UAD / waves etc. ) I can't justify .. and in some cases partly because their "service" or lack of , isn't as good as others

Actually Bapsi most likely has me beat. And although I still grab the odd bargain...my GAS has slowed considerably this last year:-)
