Track Assignment

I know there are many things that go into this decision...but if you were recording a 4 piece band, female lead vocal, 3 backup vocals, a guitar, bass and drums, would you go:

Track 1. Female lead
2. Backup 1
3.Backup 2
4. Backup 3
5. Guitar
6. Bass
7. Drums

I know it's personal preference, but I recently recorded a band like this, and assigned tracks randomly, and wish I didn't...visually it's confusing....

Then would you assign all of the backups to one buss...?

Dumb newbie questions, I know...sorry...

Thanks for any help.

Since things usually progress in this order as we track, I tend to always place tracks as follows:

    Kick
    Snare
    Toms
    HH
    Ride
    Drum OH
    Rooms Mics
    Bass
    Guitar
    Vocal
    Vocal
    Vocal
    Vocal
    Etc......

Doesn't matter much, since you can drag the tracks wherever you want later on.

    Then set up track folders

    1 - Drums
    2 - Guitars
    3 - Vocals

    Etc.......

You might want to set up up separate folders for bass/electric/acoustic guitars
You might want to set up up separate folders for lead vox/Backing vox

I usually put the vocals at the top - they are recorded last but I tend to spend more time on them.  It is nice to have them easy to reach.

Yes to Back Up Vox getting a bus.  I usually try to jell them, using the same dynamics and reverb on them.

very similar to skullsession's track organization ... but my snare is always track 1

at a minimum, the drums have a buss

For me, it seems easier to give the back-up vocalist their own buss ... each B/U vocalist's track may get eq., comp., etc and then the "B/U vocalist buss" gets reverb (I do it as a send to another buss) or what ever else I want to add to make them sound like they are singing together in the same place.  WRT placing them in the stereo field, I leave the stereo buss centered, but pan the mono tracks to one side or the other.  For example, B/U 1 is moved 60%L, B/U 2 is moved 55% L and B/U 3 is moved 45% L.  My thinking on this is that it carves out more room for the lead vocal which may be dead center ... and I can bring the B/U's up in the mix without turning the lead to mud.
