Track folders are quirky. Is there a fix? - SOLVED
In a song with lots of tracks, closing a track folder jerks the view back to track 1 at the top. If I have a track folder let's say on track #30 containing several tracks. And if I have the tracks scrolled down so where track 25 is at the top of the trackview. If I open the track folder revealing all the tracks and then close it, all of a sudden the view changes, just like I hit the HOME key. Now track 1 is at the top instead of track 25 and I've lost my place, only to have to scroll back down so track 25 is at the top. I can't imagine that this is a feature, who would want this? I'd call it a bug and it's been around for a very long time and was not in earlier versions of Sonar like 8.5. I'm not sure if this was in X3 or the 1st version of Platinum. Is there a workaround? If I hit U to return to the previous view, that doesn't work. Could there be an INI file change to fix this? Is anyone else bugged by this erratic behavior?

Actually someone else was complaining about this but for the life of me, I can't reproduce it. I tried with auto-zoom on and off, and did as you said where Track 30 was a track folder with lots of tracks and scrolled down so track 25 was just visible at the top. But if I opened and closed the track folder, it stayed put and so did the view. I also tried making the track height high and a bunch of other things, like having the console view take up half the screen...no dice. I also tried adding more tracks below the track folder and more above. Same thing. I don't if I have some magic preference set or what. Maybe you could post a screen shot of the overall layout?

I have had this happen quite often. It seems in my case it may be related to importing locked/old screensets from previous versions of Sonar. Do you have locked or imported screensets in the project the problem shows up in Gerry? I am yet to pin down a way to consistently reporoduce the issue.

Craig thanks for responding. It's encouraging to know that you're not experiencing this. I feel now we can get to the bottom of it. Here's 3 screen shots. #1 is with track 1 at the top, #2 is scrolling down to see the track folders closed, #3 is the track folder: track 19 opened by me clicking on the + to the left of the track folder. When I click on the - to close the track folder it jerks back to #1 screen shot. Here's my normal template, so you can see if it does the same for you. https://onedrive.live.com/?id=C256E2DAE26B22A5!105&cid=C256E2DAE26B22A5

I never use screensets, because I kept accidently hitting hot keys and changing the screen. So I have all the screen sets duplicated to the 1st screen of my template that I uploaded for you to check out too. I redid my template from scratch around last August. You may be onto the cause thanks,

Let's hope so - it can be a bit frustrating when it happens! One other question; does it happen consistently from when you commence a project? It seems to happen later in projects for me and was wondering if it may be a combination of older screensets/templates and archiving tracks.

Ah - good to know. Does it happen if you create a project from scratch and just create multiple tracks and folders? I still suspect a legacy issue from the template.

My template has 84 tracks, so I always use the same template and just delete tracks I don't need. I remember a song that had 3 different real drummer's performances. Each performance was about 14 audio tracks. And each performance was in a separate track folder. The folders were near the bottom of the track list, so it drove me crazy when the view kept changing back to track 1. All those audio tracks were not in my template, I manually added them to track folders.

that could be the problem. try creating a new template. I know I have had small issues with older templates, even newer templates ive created. as a test, try a new/different template.

I created new templates a few months ago and no longer had the problem. It reappeared in a project recently, but I had imported screensets from an older project. It does not happen if I start with a blank project.

How do you import screensets? I wonder if I imported screensets from the default template that would fix it. I've tried deleting a bunch of tracks even my track folders. I then created a new track folder and the same thing happens. Also I for got to mention I'm using the latest Platinum, latest installs and updates. I just loaded the default template, closed the console view, created an audio track, then a midi track, then selected both, cloned 22 times to create 46 tracks. I put track 25-36 in a track folder and the exact same behavior is present.

Worth a try. You import screensets by having two projects open and using the import screensets function in the drop-down menu of the screensets module in the project you wish to import the screensets to.

Considering I just duplicated the problem very easily in a clean default template, it seems like importing a screenset wouldn't be too useful, after all the default template should have up to date screensets. Can anyone try the recipe I did above using the default template to see if you get the same results. The most recent default template I've found in Platinum is dated 9/4/13. Is that right? Seems pretty old

Wow - I will try when I get back to the studio Gerry. Maybe my old template/screenset theory is just a post hoc fallacy.

You are absolutely right Gerry. This problem certainly seems to be back full time. If someone else could spare 2 mins to confirm this would be a great help. 1. Create a new project using the blank project option. 2. Right click in track view and use insert multiple tracks to insert 50 audio tracks. 3. Scroll down and select the last track, right click and choose 'move to new folder' 4. Now close the folder containing the new track using the ' - ' symdol on the folder track. The track view will jump back to the top of the screen 5. Scroll back down and open the folder again using the plus symbol. 6.Close the folder again. Track view will again jump to the top of the track list. I have removed all controll surfaces, have no altered or locked screensets and the problem persists. If others don't have the issue we can continue to search for a system cause. Apologies for the post hoc red herring!

@tenfoot @gmp confirmed. Same problem here. When I close a folder the track view jumps back to beginning. Not only when I put in the last track to a folder, on other tracks it's the same. But it stays when you put in the first track to a folder too. Maybe this could be a workarround. Imo, a bug. -Markus

Thanks very much Marcus - the workaround works a treat! The problem only occurs when the first track of the project is not in a folder. Tested the workaround on an old problematic project and all is good:) Also explains why my new templates worked as the first track was in a folder. Hopefully this helps solve the issue for you too Gerry:) FWIW I submitted a problem report: CWBRN-49605

Yes Markus's workaround fixes it. Man, Markus, what a great mind you have to come up with this workaround. You can definitely think out of the box - thanks. And thanks Bruce for turning in a bug report. In the mean time in my template, I've put a track folder at the top and put track 1 in it. Fortunately I always use my top track as a dummy track with text info about the song to keep me organized. So it's no big deal to have a folder. I just put my text in the name of the folder. Thanks everyone for getting rid of this headache!
