Track output to another Track input??

I’m sure this is a really stupid question but, is it possible to route the output of one track to the input of another?  I don’t mean output to a bus…..I mean another track.

For example, say you lay down a guitar track that is VERY dynamic with some severe peaks and valleys that you would like to tame and get under control.  So, maybe you go in and painstakingly apply a gain envelope to help even things out and then add some compression/limiting on top of that.

It would be great to be able to now route that track to a new track, arm the new track to record and be able to see the changes to the wave form being applied right in front of you as it is recording.

Is this even possible??  I know you could just export the treated track and then import it back in again and see how it changed, but if you could route it directly – it would save that extra step.

Bounce it to another track. That's 1 step that will give you the same result as exporting and re-importing.

Thanks for the response guys.  I appreciate your help.  I will give that a try.

Just out of curiosity......Is there anyone who thinks Track Output to new Track Input would be a useful feature??

    Let me know.

    Thanks again.

It might be useful, but I don't know what for...
In the example you're describing it would be a detour instead of a shortcut.
Freezing, bouncing, sends and buses do all the related jobs I come to think of right now..

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Many people have asked for it primarily to be able to record a soft synth performance in real time to capture interactive response of the performer to a randomly changing synth patch, and/or real-time modulation of patch parameters not recorded as MIDI controllers.

There are many audio interfaces that make this easy to do with a digital loopback. And it can be done in SONAR now by setting up a real-time bounce with live input, but it's awkward.

I thought I read somewhere that X1 is going to allow this.

The only other way I can think of s complicated. You could send the track out of sonar and re amp it and take the re amped signal back into Sonar onto another track. I would bounce the track myself.

I participated in a debate over at another forum on this very topic.  The OP at the other forum said that Sonar touts unlimited routing flexibility but lacks track to track routing - I've personally never needed it and found bounce totally sufficient.  I suspect since other DAW software products offer it - the T2T route becomes a big deal for someone to pick on - Maybe Sonar should tout "practically perfect routing' ...

I think this would be an excellent feature for Sonar X1- I hope that it's there! Quite often I need something like this, as brundle said, so that I can manipulate an audio effect using some kind of automation... The components of some audio plugins cannot be manipulated wusing envelopes, maybe because of the clunkiness btwn 32-bit/64-bit components (?). I've found that sound toys plugins cannot be automated, so I haven't found a good way to control those parameters dynamically.

thanks brundle for the idea! I'll try the "Live Input" function, even if it is a clunky solution.
