Tragedy has struck. My DAW is now just a DW.
Came in this morning and my trusty 828MKII refuses to boot. Waah!
Hopefully, it's something simple such as one of MOTU's famous cold solder joints, but I'm thinking perhaps a voltage regulator. It powers on, but won't cycle through the boot sequence.
I've heard that MOTU will do a refurb exchange for $100 + shipping, but that's not an option at the moment so I've got to take a stab at repairing it. Dagnabit! It's not like I don't already have enough BS going on...making music is all that keeps me sane.
 All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Well, I opened it up, kinda hoping to see a charred TO-220 in there, or a smoke trail, but no such luck. I identified three regulators, each of which measured at the expected voltage. The lights are on but nobody's home.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Is there a way to do a factory reboot? Sounds like it lost its brain power.
Another thing you might try is to wash down the board with PCB cleaner. Condensation can build up and dry, leaving conductive film on the board. It's a long shot.

I'm considering macrame.
I chose guitar building and making pickups...both are rewarding hobbies in many ways. Kinda strange too...both can be expensive to use making something that is worth very little...monitarily speaking. Much like DAWs so no big changeup really.

Since it's just a DW now, get some PC Games and you can have a blast. There's a bunch of free (good ones IMO) on Steam. If you like first person shooter, there's Team Fortress 2 (my personal fav), or there are RPG, puzzle, fantasy etc...types of games......all free!! If video games aren't your bag, there's always Sudoku.

I'm with ampfixer on this one. It sounds like it lost its program somehow. If I could I would attempt to reflash it. It's been awhile since I used MOTU stuff. I don't remember if they had a free download site or not. You're probably three steps ahead of me already but it was a thought.

Is there a way to do a factory reboot? Sounds like it lost its brain power. If I could I would attempt to reflash it. MOTU does provide downloadable firmware updates. Unfortunately, the box has to be able to boot itself before you can do anything of the sort. But if anybody has any other ideas, I'm open to suggestions!

I had an EMU 1820M interface that I really liked until it suddenly died. I bought a cheap ($99) interface just to get by. My 1820 is now just another brick in the wall.
I know that's not encouraging, but it's what I had to do. Hang in there, Bit.
