Travelin Man (tribute to RN)
I've always been a Ricky Nelson fan and I've always wanted to do this tune. My own arrangement, and slightly altered style. I did this kind on the spur of the moment, (actually took most of a weekend), but it's something I just needed to get out my system. Feedback welcomed. Very nice. :) I'm a big fan of RN's music. I love the sound of your electric guitar. One of the next guitars on my wish list is a semi hollow body. Love that sound.

Bub, That guitar is a heavily modified Cort M-800. It is a full hollow body, no center block like a 335. While I have upgraded the pickups and electronics (although if you find an M-800, the stock electronics are very good.) I believe the full hollow body is largely responsible for the guitar's tone (which I love). I am and always have been a hollow body guitar fan, although most of the 36 guitars I've owned have been solid bodies, and a few semi-hollow bodies. I have a large 18" bout hand-carved Campellone arch top on order, so I'm soon to be in hollow body heaven The only price for full hollow bodies is feedback control. Unlike semi-hollow bodies, fully hollow bodies will produce feedback issues at loud volumes. However you can use f-hole plugs, which help greatly in live situations. Also, in this day and age you are likely to be mic'ing your amp through the sound system anyways, so you don't need as much volume as we did back in the 60s and 70s. And for recording, the hollow body is no problem at all. It seems like guys are either "hollow body guys" or they are not. I'm an old guy now so I like old style guitars, but when I was 14 years old, big hollow bodies are the guitars I dreamed of. They just have inherently great tone.

Hey Daryl, Great cover! Your voice fits this perfectly or this song fits your voice...one or the other. Lovely guitar playing and tone. I do think the drums could come up a little, though. Nice job.

Tones and performances are great! Is it slower than the original? The tempo took me a minute to get used to, but I may not be remembering the original that well. Loved the lead licks - excellent stuff!!

Nice. I haven't heard the original, but I thought the tempo suited this mellow style well. Didn't fancy the sound of the drums, though. I'd try something with more room and more acoustic sounding.

Daryl, Great job. I heard only one problem between :15-:20. Sounds like one bass note is holding (like a MIDI pedal) while another note is sounding. Mix is really good, guitar playing, etc... You have a nice voice. Not sure if you are a fan, but I hear some Marty Robbins tones in your vocals. He had a number of pop hits around the same time RN was at his peak. Really enjoyed your production. Regards

A quick reply here. I really busy at work trying to get things cleared up so I can take a week of vacation that I really really need I have heard both here and outside this forum that my version is slower, so I checked it out and sure enough. I didn't listen to Ricky's version before I recorded this because I've known the tune intimately since I was a kid. I guess I always felt this tune was more a reminiscing ballad as opposed to exuberant display of sexual prowess It really is a lovely melody. Markno - Not sure what that is I will check it out. No midi bass on this, just my acoustic bass guitar. Thanks. folkman - You've never heard the original? Welcome to America, as you must have just moved here... from Mars. Just kidding, but that is amazing that anyone is not familiar with Ricky's tunes. I guessing that you must be fairly young. I constantly amazed by some young guys that work for me. They often have no idea who people like the Marx Brothers are or a multitude of things. Man I'm on the far end of that generation gap. I'm glad the consensus is that the vocals are OK. They take a lot more effort than guitar playing, although I've been singing this song for close to 50 years. Yet when I started recording it, I found it wasn't quite as easy as I anticipated, but far easier for me that most things. Unlike playing a musical instrument, which is always won with hard work and practice, a good voice is at least in part, a gift. (For which I was somewhat short-changed ) Daryl

Very nicely done. Clear production. Unlike many here, I was NOT a Ricky fan but I loved Ozzie and Harriet! :-) I did like the tunes but not him so much, though I wish I was as talented vocally as Ricky. Your voice does fit this well.

Warren, what are you some kind of communist, you don't like Ricky? When I was kid it seemed like Ricky had it all, and I guess he did, good looks, girls, hit records, and really nice decent family. It just didn't get any better than that. I had a very good, but poor family, but back then I would have traded lives with him in a heartbeat. But I agree, it's the songs that really worked. His sound was ahead of it's time by a few years, as was his lead man, who is nothing by today's standards but was playing licks back then that didn't show up in pop music for another 10 years. Glad you liked it. Folkman- Join the club. Everybody dislikes my drums on all my tunes ... including me (well at least for the most part.) Part of it is my lack of "drum knowledge", the other part is my general preference for unusual drum beats. Daryl

If I was going to spend $3000 on a guitar, I'd get my Martin DC-28E I've been dreaming about. I'm going to go with the guitar pictured below. It's an Epiphone Sheraton II (Left Handed). There's a lot of video demo's on Youtube of it and it has that sound I'm looking for. I called Sweetwater and they'll sell it to me for $680 including case. Basically they'll sell it to me at the right handed price, normally they charge about $50 more for lefty versions. I told the wife I want it for my 40th Birthday next month. I'm out of work right now and the idea wasn't received very well to say the least. I can't wait to hear it through my Mesa Dual Rectifier Tremoverb 2x12 Tube combo.

Bub, The Shearton II is one Epiphone's best guitars of their current offerings. While not quite a 335, it is an excellent guitar and you could bring it to within a hair of a 335 by upgrading the pickups at some point. Gibson pickups are just a little over $200 for a set of two. Pickups have long been Epiphone's weaknees ever since Gibson bought them out and kept true Humbuckers off them to give the Gibson line an advantage. You might also look for a used Heritage, which is a better guitar than the current 335s at a greatly reduced price. If you can find a Cort M-800 or M-900. I think you would find it to be a fantastic deal, and a guitar that suprisingly will compare favorably with PRS or even old Gibsons. I know that sounds like a stretch but they really are great guitars. They can be hard to find in the U.S. as Cort guitars are extremely popular in Europe where they are marketed everywhere, but here in the U.S. Cort primarily pushes their bass guitars. But there are some incredible deals on M-800s. Well worth the look. But the Shearton is nice guitar, less prone to feedback, and you can always drop top-of-the-line pickups in it for a relatively small cost. One tip to keep in mind, most over-seas guitars come with a PLASTIC nut. Take it to a GOOD guitar shop and have them custom fit a BONE or Micarta nut. Very inexpensive to do and the best upgrade for these guitars that you can do cheaply. An extremely drastic improvement. I don't know why makers scrimp on such a small priced item. A new and proper nut is like a whole new guitar. Good luck. Daryl

Daryl I think if I would replace the pickups, I would go with EMG active pickups. They are about the same price. I was reading their web site and it says to pair 2 different pickups. I think I would go with a 60/81 combo in gold. But, I gotta say, the video's I watched on Youtube sounded great with the stock pickups. I have a set of EMG SA's (Ivory) on my strat that I've had for many years. They are the old solder type, they're all quick connect now.

There are some great pickups out there from several makers. Personally I don't like pickups wired hotter. I prefer to get as accurate a tone from my guitar as I can, and get my heat from my tubes or from my pedals, but it's a matter of taste. But, is also hard to argue with the sound of classic PAF pickups. On the other hand, I also am a big fan of P-90 single coils, but they do generate more noise. DAryl
