Trial By Fire...Well, sort of...
Well, our 10 day ordeal has finally ended. Our new HVAC system has been installed and is up an running as I type. Cool, wonderful, life-giving and affirming air is flowing once again through our house. It was, to say the least, an interesting adventure to step back in time and live for 10 days in Arkansas during one of the hottest years (and heat waves) on record. But we survived. Addled though we may be. Our new system is waaaaay better, of course (technology marches on) and our bills, hopefully will be lower. But all things considered...I'm glad it's over. Hope none of you ever have to experience it. But if you do...two words...ice packs:-)

No thanks! I think I'll just stay here in the nice Pacific Northwest and enjoy the cool weather. I do NOT handle hot weather well at all...

I honestly don't think I'd cope too well. I mean the cold and you can wear extra layers but with heat, once you are in the altogether where do you go from there? Mind you it could be a bit warmer here just now without me complaining.

Wonderful!!! I know what ya were going thru with the heat. Its terrible. Yes your bills will go down especially if your system was an older 10 seer or lower system. Did they also replace the furnace? If so you will notice a few changes in operation there as well in heating. Happy your coolin now.

we just spent a boat load of money on a new system as well. our old system was over 25 years old and was leaking freon inside the house. our new system is supposed to save us a bunch of money on electric bills... so I hope we both get what we are hoping for !!!

Glad you have the AC back! I did install those and I don't miss it at all. Now I am on the tech end of things. I remember home owners saying how hot it was meanwhile I'm up in their attic and it has to be 130 F up there and I'm rolling around in the insulation. I'm thinking to myself,if they think its hot down there they should come up here! The system I installed in my house about 9 years ago is still going strong. I got it as a scratch and dent and replaced the condenser under warranty. It was actually a little too cool the other day. This fall I plan to take it out and install a heat pump to offset the high cost of oil heat. The new technologies use a larger condenser than you really need in the summer and a variable speed compressor. In the winter the larger condenser comes in handy to extract more heat from the air,so the capacity is larger in the winter than in the summer. Another great idea they came up with is to stage the pressure reduction, lowering the pressures in winter, theory being that a lower pressure will allow the extraction of more heat from the air advertised down to 15F on some models. Still not quite the performance you can get from a geothermal system but close without the investment that a geo system requires and takes years to recover. Heat pumps were not a good choice in the northeast until recently when they have started to improve the technologies and I like the idea of burning good old PA electricity generated by our own coal and not oil from the mideast.
