Tribute To Shawn - Some Fusion-y Stuff

Hey guys, appreciate some tips on the mix and on the music if you like.
This is a tribute to one of my guitar heroes Shawn Lane, The Memphis Monster!

It isn't mastered but there is some EQ on the master bus.

Any tips, criticisms or ideas?

Thanks guys.

BTW I realise its pretty quiet, just push your speakers, obviously there will be some kind of limiting going on when mastering.

My friend Dave used to work with Shawn... we were speaking about him a few weeks ago and took the opportunity to watch a bunch of YouTube videos.

He seemed like a super nice guy.

That's a cool song and some great guitar moves.

    best regards,

It's played very well and there's plenty there to keep one's interest. :-)  I'm not real fond of the drum sounds, but perhaps they fit the genre.  Nice one!

Very nice done!  Great mix and instrumentation.  There is a bit too much drums.  A bit overdone and it is distracting to the main melody.  You seems to repeating too much of the main theme.  Add some slight variations each time you play it to make it more interesting.

    LOVELY PLAYING...

    i hear the shawn influence...

this would be circa Powers of Ten era, yes, no?

    i understand the drumming....
this is very much like the type of riffs that shawn would play to.

in this case, the drums sound TOO canned....

there are too many obviously repeated riffs....it sounds like cool fills just cobbled together...

a stronger drum track, would lift this instrumental about 5 notches, for what it's worth.

    soundwise, it's a bit muddy....
the drum eq is close, but could use some refinement.

the guitar, even tho it's obviously got treble rolled off for a smooth tone from the amp, is missing some 'attack' in it, maybe around 2khz, that would give a bit more edge without making the guitar too bright.

a bit more attack on the drums as well.....
the kick is not deep enough to match the deep quality of the bass....

i mean, you're so close, it's just some mix tweaks.

keyboard needs to be louder and a tad brighter.

i would not fix this in mastering, i'd re-mix til you get a nice sheen to it, without being harsh.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions and criticism guys.

I know the drums are pretty busy but that is definitely the feel I was going for, perhaps I will tone them down a little.

BatsBrew - Thanks for checking it out man. There are a lot of repeated parts it is true but I dunno, I kinda like having a theme or chorus as it were with the same melody. Perhaps I will change some of the instrumentation around each chorus theme to alter it slightly?
I will take all of your EQ ideas on board when I re-mix tomorrow :)

Oh btw, what do you mean by the drums sounding 'canned?'

adji, whatever the drums are (real, sampled, triggered, etc) the attack and decay of them, to my ears, sounds canned.

    meaning, not real.

there are a lot of 'subjectives' floating around my opinions and suggestions, so have salt ready....

but, in short, yes, having the drums do a DIFFERENT groove and feel at the head of each repeated section, would go a long way to making the guitar work stand out more.

themes and choruses are always good to have and repeat, especially for folks that are more used to singing parts, but you can stretch out more on the way the drums groove, and the fills in particular, even if you're repeating music motifs.

Ah right I see. I used Superior Drummer 2. I intentionally had the drums rather dry and snappy as that is the sound I pictured when going for this. I do have a small room reverb going on, perhaps largening the size of the room might help some?

Thanks for the extra tips. I'll mess about with the drum grooves in the repeated theme and possibly throw in a variation in the filler licks.

Also still to be recorded is a vocal line following the guitar in the choruses, similar to how Lane and all the fusion guys do where they kind of go go 'Da Da Da Dah' along with the melody. This might help distinguish the second chorus from the first also.

Thanks though man, I'll work some more today :)

The guitar playing is sick!! Big fan of Shawns and really liked him with Jonas H, and Jeff Sipes!

My only criticism is the drum sound is not good. You can tell immediately that they are not real.

I guess its cuz I'm a drummer who likes real drums and I do not like programmed drums.
They never sound real to me. Only ones I have heard that sound real are sampled.

Your homage to Shawn is very beautiful!!

    Appreciate your sharing this!!

    Peace!!

Hey man yeah I know what you mean. The drums sound pretty good to me but I'm not a drummer so there you go lol. Superior Drummer 2 is sampled drums not synthetic but I know what you mean, you can still never quite capture a real drummers sound regardless of how much automation and velocity changing you do. Unfortunately this is one of the limitations of a bedroom 'studio' lol.
