Tried an original country song.

Hello guys,

Tried an original country song. Home recording - Sonar X1, Tri-Capture, SM58, Acoustic guitar.

Would appreciate some feedback. Composed the track, wrote the lyrics but not a vocalist. Though not a vocalist but not getting a studio like finish especially in the vocal part in terms of the sound quality and technical finesse. Would appreciate tips/feedback.

Thanks. Here's the link below:

Hi Kane,I don't think the vocal is the problem. The drums don't seem to be very appropriate , way to loud. The guitar is way to soft and there are some intonation and timing problems imho.

Kane, I would almost rather have just acoustic and no drums.  They are distracting.  Maybe a couple guitar tracks, some bgv, etc.  If you are going to use drums, I would suggest a simple bass line too.  It's a work in progress but that's the fun of it, right?  Keep on strummin!  Welcome to the forum.

Hi Kane, good effort. I can hear a good song in here!

Q - did you play some drums acoustically, actually recording yourself playing drums? If so, put it on a grid in Sonar and get the timing a little tighter to the grid. The grid is like evenly spaced fenceposts that fly by as you race down the red dirt country road  :)

If your drums are samples or midi files, same thing.

Once you have the drums more or less locked to the grid, it's time to get a bass guitar on this. I don't think there has been a country song ever written without a bass guitar.

Or, you could just drop the "country" idea and go for something in the Nick Drake department, which might suit your style better? I dunno - but  can hear your song in this, keep at it!

cheers,
-Tom

Re: The song. It's all been said. But to be fair, I would not call it a country tune.

Hello guys,

Warren. what is bgv (my bad). will insert a bass line and another acoustic rhythm. yeah that's WIP and fun :) Thanks.

Tom. Thanks. Yeah, the grid part could have been much much better. will work on it and yes a bass line. And it is midi drumming. And liked the part 'racing down the red dirt country road' :) on a silver Chevy? :)

Ed. point noted. Thanks :)

Kane

Kane, bgv is "background vocals".

Hi Kane,

The Bar On Highway 82 is off to a good start.

An easy way to tone down the drums is to select brush drums instead of sticking with the standard drum set.  A percussion sound such as shaker would add some depth.

A second guitar track would add some sound when you switch to picking out the notes.  If you have guitar 1 doing mostly whole or half note strums and the second guitar track playing fingerpick would work.

Hi Kane,

Sorry for the late reply...been involved in other stuff.

I think you should keep trying and do as many songs as you can. It is the only way you will get better. Music is very subjective, so what I think about this song or any other song for that matter is just one person's take on something.

Do things that sound good to you and change and evolve as time goes by.

There has been a lot of good feed back posted that you can consider. Take note of what people say but at the end of the day you have to make you own decisions. It is always good to ask for help when you get stuck with something.

Cheers,

Billy
