Trigger vocoder with sonar midi?

Hi there... I'm going crazy trying to get Sonar to send midi notes to a vocoder.
I am trying UAD Softube vocoder and I also have Waves morphoder.

Method:
- open CW plugin manager
- find vocoder, go to options and configure it as a synth
- save to plugin list
- have audio track in sonar with vocal clip on it, insert vocoder as a synth into that audio track's bin
- create midi track, select the vocoder as the output. Input set to midi omni
- i see midi activity on the midi track but midi not going to either vocoder plug in

What am I doing wrong? I've tried with both vocoders.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Jono

Starting with X3 there is no need to configure an effect as a synth. The setup is the same for any effect plug-in that reads MIDI data. The steps are:
    1) add the plug-in to the FX rack of the track/bus to be affected
    2) Use the VST2/3 drop down above the plug-in UI to "Enable MIDI Input"
    3) Add a MIDI track with input set to the controller, output set to the plug-in, enable input echo
