Triggering events with a keyboard (the black and white kind)

I recall that there was a function in Sonar where you could hold down a designated key on a midi keyboard and then hit another one, and you could get it to do stuff like start recording or undo event. This is useful for if you are recording a midi piano by yourself. Unfortunately I've forgotten how to do it. Does anyone know? If you haven't heard about this, it's very useful.

Nevermind, I found it. For those who don't know this feature, it's actually a secondary option of key bindings. You can find it on page 994-995 of the reference guide for X1.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware you could do this.

This functionality has always been a little flaky.

I just tried setting it up again, and it doesn't seem to be working fully in either X1 or 8.5.3 - at least not for transport control. Stop, Pause and Rewind are okay, but Record just plays the count-in, and then starts the transport without putting it in Record mode, and Play (Play/Stop or Play/Pause toggle in X1) does not start playback.

I'd be interested to know if the OP or anyone else can get Play and Record to work.

Play and record work perfectly for me. Perhaps you have more than one thing bound to certain keys? Or vice versa. Very strange behaviour. It could be the keyboard itself causing problems, but now that I think about it that doesn't make much sense.

Actually, that does make sense, and it solves the problem. The keyboard I'm using sends All Notes Off when the last key is released. I would have thought the MIDI keybinding function would ignore this, just as it ignores individual Note Off messages, but apparently not. The function works with a keyboard that does not send All Notes Off.

I normally have MIDI Event Filters in MIDI tracks for synths that don't get along with this, but there's no way to block it for MIDI keybindings.

Fortunately my keyboards are stacked, so I can use the other one for MIDI keybinding. It does make recording a little easier.

Thanks for reminding me about both MIDI keybindings, and All Notes Off. I was just discussing that in another thread, but somehow it didn't occur to me it might have an impact here.
