Triplets

Hi!

I own an old version of Sonar LE and mainly use it for songwriting. However, it has a few annoying limitations on displaying triplets in the staff view. They make impossibile to notate a wide range of melodies.

Is there any version of Sonar providing full support for triplets?

Thanks!

I will move to a different sequencing software, then. It's really a major limitation!

It's not impossible at all.  Sonar won't display them correctly, but will play them perfectly.  Any kind of triplet, including dotted, tied and nested triplets, will play back correctly.

If that isn't what you need, I'd go with Digital Performer for Windows--it's a great program, looks great (except the tiny fonts) and does everything Sonar does...

I actually need to write down leadsheets of my songs. I'll take a look at Digital Performer!

You can also compose in Sonar and export your type 1 midi file into Sibelius.  The triplets will then either look correct or can be easily edited to make them so.

I've tried Finale Notepad, which is completely free, but unfortunately it doesn't import correctly my MIDI 1 files with lyrics created with Sonar: tracks are handled in the right way but lyrics completely disappear importing from Sonar to Notepad. Moreover, when I export a Finale Notepad document as a MIDI file, lyrics written in Notepad are lost in the conversion. This is awkward since I need to produce both a leadsheet and a MIDI file with lyrics of my songs. I need an all-in-one solution such as Cubase Elements, which is relatively cheap.

It's interesting how different users have different experiences/views. When I tried DP8, I found everything other than the control bar and the mixer view quite unattractive (the track strips in the track view looked to me like Excel spreadsheets), and I couldn't even add a new bus by right-clicking the blank space in the mixer.

In Staff View, if I select triplets and then click in the staff, I get a triplet.  I then right click each note and edit it's value.  For example, I may get three Es and have the change them the E, F, G.

Also, if I add notes and change their duration to triplet values, Sonar displays them as triplets AS LONG AS THEY ARE ON THE SAME STAFF.  It does not work going from bass to treble or vice-versa, although it plays correctly.

So, I don't know if I am misunderstanding, or if LE has limitations not in other versions.

The problem is that only triplets with exactly 3 notes having the same duration can be correctly *displayed*. For instance, rests are not allowed in a triplet.

Reaper will be incorporating a score editor soon. We'll have to wait to see how it compares to Sonar, but if it gets triplets right (actually, more correctly called "tuplets"), and allows seamless navigating in two dimensions like sonar does, it will be extremely tempting, especially as it only costs $60.00. Plus it runs in Linux, thus solving the Rocky Windows Horror Show.

waiting for Reaper then... I couldn't find system requirements of the current version on the web site, but I guess it is much less resource consuming than Cubase...

I should have clarified my comments:  Sonar DOES display triplets correctly, 1/2 note, quarter-note, eighth, and sixteenth-note triplets ARE displayed correctly and always have been.  Tied, dotted and nested triplets do not display correctly, however they play back correctly.   32nd triplets also do not display correctly, but they too will play back properly.
