Trouble selecting multiple clips efficiently - CWBRN-33123
I need some guidance on selecting clips. At this point Platinum is not nearly as fast and efficient at selecting multiple clips in multiple tracks as I've done using 8.5. Certainly I must be missing some good methods, yet I'm not having any luck searching the help file at solving this. Here's what I was trying to do today. At the end of a song that I played piano bass and drums with there was a ritard. I played it first with the piano. Then with the bass and drums I split their clips in the clip pane and moved each note until I was in sync with the piano ritard. So at the end ritard the piano had 2 clips, the bass had 2 or 3 and the drums had about 4 or 5 clips. Then I decided to move all the clips together as a group to match to words in the vocal. This is where it got awkward. I selected the first drum clip at the ritard, by clicking on the clip, I then held control and clicked on the first bass clip, I held control and clicked on the first piano clip. Then I hit my shortcut key for "thru to end", which moves the selection from the beginning of the ritard to beyond the end of the song. If this was 8.5, I would now be ready to move the piano, bass, and drums to match the vocal. Yet In Platinum if I move those 3 tracks, not all of the drum or bass clips will move, only the first 3 I selected manually. If we just look at the drum track only. I see the first clip selected and it's very bright, but the other clips you can see are selected, but they're pretty dark, but not as dark as if they were unselected. The only way I know to get all the clips selected is to go to the far left and hold control while unselecting the drum track and then while holding control re-select the drum track. Now all the drum clips light up as below. I have to then go to the bass track and do the same control unselect - select and the same for the piano track. Now everything is lit up brightly colored clips that are selected and ready to move. Certainly there must be a better way of doing this, than to have to go through several additional steps when in 8.5 there are no additional steps. One last thing is you have to be very careful when control unselect and re-selecting tracks, because I you click too fast it will instead select every track in the song and you have to start all over. The house of cards falls to the ground! I still don’t understand why Platinum works this way, I can see no benefit to having a track with some clips selected real bright and other clips selected that are dark colored. I must be missing something, this can't be a bug is it?

I haven't checked what you mentioned about Thru=End not working as expected to extend a selection in Platinum in that scenario, but it wouldn't surprise me if the behavior has changed since 8.5.3. The easy way to get that kind of selection in Platinum might be to Lasso groups of clips by right-click and drag, using Ctrl+Lasso to add to the selection as necessary if the range isn't contiguous over time or across tracks.

I've experimented with that technique some. In this picture below I tried it 2 different ways. One was start the right click drag at bar 147 and drag back to bar 142 and I got this selection below where it instead also selects a clip back to bar 140. If I try to drag that group it drags from bar 140 to 147 instead of bar 142 to 147. If I try it the 2nd way where I start at bar 142 and drag to 147 I get the same incorrect selection of 140-147. And why is there a gap at bar 141, where the clip is a dark selection.

Could you click the Expand/collapse Take lanes button in the lower left corner of the track header and let us see what the clips look like in Take lanes?

Yes, Lasso selects whole clips. If you need a time range that cuts across clips, you'll have to select the time range, and then Ctrl+Select the tracks you want to copy from (or vice versa). The "highlight" of a partial clip selection is dark. My guess is that the apparent gap you're seeing is due to the underlying clip extending beyond the boundaries of the time range. As Tak indicated, it will help to be able to see exactly what's in all the lanes. I'll try to check the Thru=End functionality a little later. I use this all the time to extend selections and hadn't noticed that it's not working as expected in Platinum. If there's an issue, it might have to do with lanes and/or clip locking.

Yes, that would be expected behavior for Lasso in this case because the clips in T5 and T6 would be touched by lassoing back to 142, automatically extending the selection back to the beginning of the clip in T5, but two of the three clips in T7 starting around 141 would be excluded because they weren't touched. Selecting a time range to include only partial clips is the only way around this.

I've confirmed that the extension of selection using From=Start and Thru=End changed with the switch from layers to lanes in X2. If you start with a partial selection of a clip, earlier/later clips will be included in the extension of the selection as expected. But if you start with a whole clip(s) selected, the selection shadow will be extended, but earlier/later separate clips will not become highlighted and selected. This applies to both single- and multi-lane tracks. Selecting/re-selecting additional tracks lanes after the range is extended works as expected.

I just recorded an audio track with a lot of punching, but no slip editing. I selected the 1st clip and hit "thru to end", The selection in the time ruler went to the very end, but all the other clips were not selected, not even dark selected. In 8.5 I'd be ready to export the mix, yet in Platinum I have to take the additional step of unselecting and then reselecting the track on the far left. I did find a better way of doing this in Platinum that's just as good as 8.5. Instead of selecting the 1st clip, leave all clips unselected and simply click on the track number and it selects every single clip in the track. So in this instance Platinum is just fine. Yet is less efficient if I want to instead select clip #3 to the end. I have to take the additional step of unselecting and reselecting the track. Again being very careful not to click too fast or else I'll select every track in the song. Also time ruler selection really doesn't work as well in Platinum as in 8.5. If I select the last clip in a track with multiple clips and then hit rewind (W) and "From = Now" (F9). The time ruler shows the whole song selected bar 1 to end, but the only thing selected in the track is the last clip that I selected manually. In 8.5 all the clips would be selected.
If I instead of selecting the last clip just drag the time ruler so it selects beyond the end of the last clip and then hit rewind (W) and "From = Now" (F9). It does work correctly. All the clips are selected. Why should that be different from the 1st selecting the last clip method? It makes no sense, the time ruler looks the same in both instances. So far no one has come up with an efficient way to select all those midi clips in my original post.

You are correct, but do you see any logic for it working this way? The old way seems much better and less confusing. With an audio track with lots of clips, at bar 77 in the middle of a clip, hit From=Now and Thru=End. Now the track is selected from that point to the end. I can see the clip at bar 77 the selection is midway in the clip, so it's a dark selection.. Hit delete. Then hit Thru=Now, W and From=Now. Now all the remaining clips are selected. If I instead select the whole clip at bar 77, Then hit W and From=Now, all of the clips are not selected. What is the logic in this? It seems to me this is simply an oversight or bug or lost feature.

Yes, I agree it's a regression bug. I recommend you enter a formal problem report and add the resulting CWBRN number and title to this thread, preferably something more descriptive of the actual problem like: "Extending Selection by Thru=End Not Working Consistently". https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Contact/Problem-Report A Forum Host will then move it to Problem Reports forum.

Should be good. As explained in post #7, I think the result you got with lasso was consistent with the way it's designed to work.
