Trying to get Kirnu to work in Platinum

I think I have Kirnu 1.2.2 set up properly since I can play into it with the virtual keyboard and have its output go to the AAS player and notes are arpeggiated and sound comes out.  However, I can never get Kirnu to do anything other than what must be a default pattern (some sort of down-up-up-down that I can't quite figure out).  At first, no amount of clicking and twiddling on anything in the GUI had any effect (the knobs did move) but after loading the 00_Init.fxp preset now at least the adjustment that was done is displayed in the little window above "Global Settings".  Loading different presets then is reflected in the lower pattern 'bar graph' window, but the actual pattern produced is never other than the default.

Both Kirnu and the AAS player are loaded in the synth rack.  I have a "Kirnu" midi track whose input is the virtual controller and output is to the AAS Player 1.  The AAS player's midi track's input is "Kirnu 1 - Omni" and output is "AAS Player 1".  The AAS's audio track's input is AAS Player 1 Primary Output:Stereo and its output goes to Master.

As far as my setup goes, I don't understand why Kirnu and the AAS Player driven by it can each have their own midi clip.  If I enter a chord of notes into a midi clip in Kirnu's track, the chord gets arpeggiated in the synth.  But I can also put a chord into a clip in the synth's midi track and it will also play and get arpeggiated.  How is that possible ?   On top of this, the pattern produced is not the same in each case.  Also, even a single note in Kirnu's midi clip generates an down up up down two-note pattern whereas if I move the same clip containing the one note into the AAS Player's midi track I then get an more-than-two-note down up up down sequence of some sort.

EDIT : I'm dumb...  The sample I was using in AAS Player was arpeggiated on its own.  And now I can't  get Kirnu to do anything useful.  Anyway, the following question still stands.

All the above to ask if anyone is using Kirnu 1.2.2 in Platinum and it works, in which case I'll persevere.  Otherwise I'll take a look at BlueARP.

I have it but have rarely use it. I just went through the basic usage video on here http://www.kirnuarp.com/media
and it worked OK in SONAR. Maybe the rest of the videos would help.

It's been awhile since I've used Kirnu........not sure what's causing that issue. Possibly uninstall & re-install?

I downgraded to version 1.2.1 (1.2.2 was beta) and get more action but it's inconsistent, things work on and off and notes are dropped and I guess it's just not worth the trouble since this is an old plugin.

Could it be the MIDI prepare buffer setting in Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording? I updated to v1.2.3 before testing and posting.

Thanks for the help but I may be wasting our time (sorry) playing around with the old free Kirnu before it became Cream.  I believe version 1.2.3 is Cream which I don't have.  And for some reason version 1.2.1 now does nothing at all, except act as a midi thru (playing with midi buffers doesn't do anything).  I'll try BlueArp (also free) and if that fails I wait to buy something useful.

You are correct, I misunderstood and was not testing the free precursor to Cream. The version numbers threw me. Before this thread I had Cream v1.1.0 installed and assumed you were working with a newer version of it.

Re: Trying to get Kirnu to work in Platinum 2015/12/27 17:57:09 (permalink)
Just to wrap this thread up, it turns out Kirnu and similar plugins need an audio track hooked up to them, taking their audio output. of which there is none, and sending it nowhere (to none).  Once this is done, everything works properly.

I started another thread in the Sonar forum seeking to learn why this dummy audio track is necessary.  It turns out this is because they're built as a vsti and not a MIDI fx.

Watching the video, it looks like it's a lot more than an arpeggiator.  More like a complete daw (edm oriented).
I can't find much more information so I may be wrong.  I only need a pattern-based arpeggiator.  I have several with Cakewalk, but only x3ta+2 lets me edit the pattern, which is crucial.  I've seached far and wide for a .ptn editor (I suppose a .arp editor would also work), but only P5 appears to have been able.  Cthulhu also looks pretty nice.

Nora lets you create the pattern.

Check out a digital copy of Computer Music issue 225.  You can get a Computer Music version of Nora for $5 (the cost of the digital mag).

Or download the demo, etc.

Looks interesting....
Are there any limitations in the CM version?

The abilites are a bit stripped down.  All software has certain limitations.

This sheds some light on what it can do:
http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/free-vst-au-arpeggiator-squaredheads-nora-cm-631462

and the quote at the bottom points to some things the full blown version adds.

If Nora CM's melodic manipulations have you itching for more, take a look at the full version, Nora 2. It features up to five octaves and up to eight notes per octave, a powerful Pattern Editor allowing 64 patterns per track, a Randomizer for generating ad-hoc patterns, over 1200 presets, and more. Head over to Squaredheads' website for the full lowdown.

Nice video, better than the other one.  I can't help but think that Sonar already has almost everything that's needed.  Just needs retriggering and transposing on notes, some chord unpacking and maybe fitting notes to a scale.  Nora is way overkill, what with its step sequencer/piano roll view, etc.

Lots of other plugins goodies included.

Some I use all the time:

Toneboosters Baracade CM
SideWidener (way better than what comes with Sonar, IMO)
G8 CM

Not to mention the other effects and instruments

(It even comes with Kirnu Cream CM)
