Trying to help a friend...

http://stabilitynetwork.blob.core.windows.net/g-tunes/20130313_Susan_02_Medicine2.mp3

My friend played chords and sang this song. Then, I worked with another friend and tried to decorate the song.

Does this sound at all ok?

I'm having fun, but I'm not sure I've improved the basic...

It does indeed sound OK. Better than OK actually. I think you should keep working on it a bit... it needs some filling out on places, but otherwise a good start to a great song.

This song has a lot of potential.  The mix needs a little tweaking-the guitar solo is too far in the background to compete with the rhythm guitar, but the vocal is well recorded which is the centerpiece  of this song.  You're off to a good start, and it shouldn't take much to take this to the next level.

    All the best,

I think you're doing pretty good so far. Only listening on lappy speakers, so make of this what you will, but I would back the vox off a little so that it sits better with the instruments - maybe a little automation to tame the parts where she lets rip a little, I like to hear dynamics, but a couple of bits made me think...ouch bit too loud there.

Thanks all! I was thinking about pulling back the vocal a little. and I had just pulled the guitar lead down a touch, not wanting it to be too much about the screaming guitar. I'll see if another adjustment or two might not help it.

Thanks for listening!! I'll post again after another bounce or two.

I have listened to a minuter or two from each mix.  I'm almost thinking I like the very top one on your post.  It is so pure that I would even take some stuff off the lead guitar.  That's just my opinion.  We played for years with an acoustic quartet and we didn't use any amps or effects.  We actually did play some large venues where we had to be run through the pa.  We only used verb on the vocal.    This reminds me so much of that.  Your friend is a very good singer.  I would suggest that she writes in some type of chorus or something.  It sounds good but gets a bit redundant (right word?) after awhile.  No insult intended there, it's just my preference.  You can do a lot when you have a singer like that.
