Trying to update win8 to win8.1
Today I was finally somewhere with my laptop that had a good enough connection to allow the windows store to open...
It took near 4 hours to download and install finishing with asking for a reboot with a timer to do so automatically in 15 minutes...
I clicked to restart and the machine began the reboot, but instead of loading windows, it shut down?
After waiting a few minutes thinking this might be normal, I turned the machine on manually. Again it started up, then shut the machine off...
I manually started it again and this time got a message saying windows 8.1 failed to install and automatically began a restore to the previous version (win8) and shut down again.
When I started it again, I was back in win8 where I left off...
I've been searching/reading all I can find about 8.1 update problems and found some close, but nothing actually what happened to me.
I had considered waiting for win10, but the notice dies not appear in my bin... It does on my DAW (win7), but not on the laptop where I'm willing to try it...
Very frustrating...
I've installed all updates and the system claims all drivers up to date...?
Any ideas?
Thanks... Keni

If you are running a cd daemon, disable that. That prevented the upgrade for me in the past.

Thanks gustabo... But I'm not familiar with the term "cd daemon". Would you mind telling me what such is, and maybe the names of one or two examples? Keni

Probably going to have to download and try the install again. I had that same problem with the Win 10 Preview on one of the Preview versions. It downloaded, went through the updating (took about 5 hours) and then failed and ultimately restored to the previous version. I tried the update again and after going through the 5 hours to update it worked OK. Make sure you have any other updates installed first, before doing the 8.1 update.

Wow!
Thanks guys!
Lots of good info, advice and links...
I'll give them a try ASAP...
I did find a few updates that are recent and I hadn't installed them yet. As 8.1 has been out for a while already I was guessing the mire recent updates wouldn't be necessary...
Guess I was wrong again...? ;-)
I installed the updates between 3-8am when I have unlimited download (satellite), but as I don't currently (I guess that could be a pun?) have electric service, I would need to start and run my generator at such nasty hours... And though I can run windows update from here, the store doesn't seem to be able to open. It always tells me I gave no internet connection...
So I will attempt again when I can be at someone's good connection...
In the meantime I will investigate the failure cleanup and look into the update/upgrade assistant...
Thanks again!
I'll post when I gave more news!

Alcohol and Daemon Tools are two examples, virtual cd/dvd drives that let you mount an image as a drive.

Microsoft decided that everyone should be on 8.1, so they stopped pushing updates for anyone still on 8.0. If you have pending patches/updates showing in Windows 8.0, you can assume they are needed to fully update 8.0. After you update to 8.1 there will be a bunch of 8.1 patches that you will need to install before you will be able to get 10.

This is definitely one of the more frustrating things I've dealt with lately
Last night I tried to log into the Microsoft store during my unlimited time...
It tells me I'm not connected to the Internet and the icon in the tray says the same... Yet I can browse anywhere and even log into the online store.
I've been searching all the online help I can find including microsoft's own, but none of the items fixed anything and some of them seem to be unreachable... MS online help is all 8.1!
I've noticed the inconsistency many times before but gave it no notice as everything else worked fine except for logging into the windows store from the tile on the start screen...
It works fine from my friend's house who was the original owner of the laptop. His house was where it failed to install at the restart point...
The most recent thing I'm trying though I'm not really believing it is specific to my connecting point, is trust this PC... It doesn't appear in the locations the online solutions claim...
Bewildered...
This is all so hard compounded with my lack of electricity (only generator for a few hours/day), my own web connection, lack of money to do anything...
It has to be something stupid simple that I'm overlooking... Why on this connect and not the other? Connect signal is good and my other pc's are all properly web connected but win7Pro and Vista64...XP, and Mac OS I believe Lion.... Oh, and two iPads as well as an iPod touch?
Thanks... I just powered down the laptop as it is down to 64% and I can't recharge until 8pm tonight... I'm on the iPad at this moment...
Thanks for tolerating my frustration...

Tried again today...
All updates have been installed...
Update assistant says all us ready except for a Bluetooth driver that should be re-installed after the update...
Install failed the same way... Download, backup, install, restart, some processing, then the machine shuts down. Starting it again makes the machine revert back to 8....
Sad...

Hmmm... I'm still on 8.0 and each time I get a message to upgrade to 8.1 I click the "remind me later" button. Reading this does not fill me with confidence

Yeah... I know what you mean.. I was amazed at the large number of people encountering the same common problems/results. I used their own (Microsoft) program to establish compatibility, downloaded every update available for 8.0 and it still fails... And I notice that during the beginning of the install it performs tests for compatibility there as well! I'm really tired from this current method/path they're following... 7 hours to download the update twice and having it fail both times... For a point update! It's not even a full version... I seem to be battling with issues on a couple of machines right now. Thankfully my DAW is running fine if you allow for the fact that both DVD drives are dead... Keni

I would post your specific 8.1 upgrade problems on the Windows 8 forum. Someone there should be able to get it resolved. http://www.eightforums.com/
