Trying to upload to Soundcloud
As I am currently mixing a Project and appriciates feedback from the other musicians. Sonar X3d says that it's unable to do so. I get a window that 1st says after exporting is done: "Unable to launch "Soundcloud - xxx" Encoder" doesn't matter if flac, wav or mp3 and then says "Warning: the external encoder returned an error code. The file may not have been encoded properly."
Have tried to check firewall and found nothing. Am lost here. Works of course fine to bonce to wav and go upload that but would be nice if sonar worked as expected.

I am not familiar with that error. I did happen to upload something to Sound Cloud a couple of days ago - I do not recall if I did it from within Sonar or if I did it from Sound Cloud, but I DID happen to notice the web page for my account has a notification in the upper right of the page that they are acknowledging some sort of processing error for anything uploaded to Sound Cloud as of I believe it is Feb 05, and that they are aware of it and are working on some sort of a solution. That error had something to do with an audio stream, or something like that, and may not apply to the error you are seeing - it's really all I have to give you at this point, as I do not know anything about the particular error you are getting. Sorry I don't know more about it, Bob Bone

Thank you, no problem uploading directly to Soundcloud. Just don't work from within Sonar X3d?

I just uploaded a small bass snippet that had been bouncing about in my cranium, so I wouldn't forget it, and it uploaded directly from the Sound Cloud web page for my account with no trouble, and it plays back nicely. Here is the link for it, in case you want to hear what I thought was a catchy odd-meter snippet: https://soundcloud.com/robert-bone/bass-bump There is a second little clip that will start up automatically, a few seconds after the bass clip ends, and it has a few sounds from some of my Reaktor 5 custom ensembles, and an example of a freeware synth called MinimogueVA, and another called the ARP2600VA. The little sound examples are played VERY sloppy, but the intent was to give someone a super-fast idea of the kinds of home-grown sounds one can develop. The snippets include: Reaktor 5 - The Who - Baba Reaktor 5 - Genesis - Firth of Fifth keyboard solo Reaktor 5 - The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again organ sound MinimogueVA - Pink Floyd - On The Run ARP2600VA - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Karn Evil 9 intro The snippets are a diversion - but hey, why not? :) Bob Bone

I'm not up to date, but isn't it a fact that Sonar does not include MP3 encoding, That you have to manually install it. The reasons given is it avoids licencing that would add to the cost. I use Wave Lab and it was the same thing, The earlier version had unlimited encoding but the new version only allowed 10 songs. I downloaded the Lame codex but haven't figured out how to get it in the system. I just fire up my XP desktop and do it there. I have to do this anyhow as my DAW is not on the internet. You'll find that soundcloud converts your song to 160 KBPS. I uploaded a 190 and then downloaded it and I noticed this. PS - Chrisland do you know we have a song forum here ? Excellent way to work through your new born creations with a peer group. http://forum.cakewalk.com/Songs-f27.aspx

OK - I was successful in uploading a sloppily-played snippet of an idea I just wanted to capture before forgetting, so please ignore the playing. I DID look up things in the Sonar documentation, and it indicates that if you are trying to upload multiple audio tracks, that you have to do it from the Sound Cloud web site. Here is the link to the Sonar doc page: http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X3&Lang=EN&Req=SoundCloud.3.html Please note that while the upload itself was successful, when I go to the actual Sound Cloud clip's page to play it back, it says it is processing the sound. The uploaded file is maybe 1 or 2 minutes of audio max, so I hope this doesn't indicate a problem. I will post back when it finishes, one way or the other. Oh - here is the link to the test clip I shared directly from Sonar X3: https://soundcloud.com/robert-bone/sound-cloud-sonar-x3-test Bob Bone

Hey, Cactus - thanks for jumping into the thread. I happened to notice that the bit-rate encoding seems to depend on the type of SoundCloud File Type you select when doing the Sonar Export. For example, selecting the Sound Cloud MP3 file type apparently generates a file encoded at 256 k. It is discussed in that doc page I posted the link to. Also, I will go find a thread that gives the configuration stuff needed for using the free Lame MP3 encoder in Sonar, and will post that shortly. Bob Bone

An update - when I went to the clip I shared to Sound Cloud from Sonar, it was just sitting there, saying the track was being processed, with a timer incrementing - it had gotten up to 8 minutes. On a hunch, I did a page refresh, and lo and behold, it had been done, and played back just fine. I think that particular issue is a Sound Cloud issue, not related to exporting to Sound Cloud from Sonar, but I thought I would mention it, as it did occur. Also, upon playback, the audio track starts out with the drums, but then the drums drop out, instead of playing under the keyboard tracks, like they were supposed to. Then, after the keyboards stop playing, the drums come back in. THAT is a giant mess - and I will be exploring this, to see what in the world made that giant puddle of pooh. Bob Bone

I've bought the mp3-encoder so that should not be the problem. I'm going to try to Bounce one track only and upload it to soundcloud instead of mutiple tracks. Tried to upload just one track from within Sonar, no go, tried to Bounce the song and import it to a "test" projekt and upload from there, did not work. Wav and mp3 or flac doesn't matter? Really strange. Could be some other problem with my PC as I occasionally is asked to revert to Classic Soundcloud as the new version of Soundcloud does not work.

Could it be something weird but simple, like running Sonar with Run As Administrator making any difference? (I hate to even ask, because it seems like that option has popped up in my last thousand posts, for one reason or another, and I do not want to obsess over that any more than I already have) Bob Bone

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a go. Also I'll see about the higher bit rate. Didn't seem to matter as my re downloads when A/B'd sound OK. I'm following the new rules for mastering for MP3 and I try not to go past -.6 Db.

@chrisland - it is important that you understand that logging in to a user that has administrative privileges is NOT the same as running an install or a program with the setting Run As Administrator. These ARE 2 different things. Even when you log on to a user that is an administrator, program execution has a reduced set of privileges. This is how they designed and built Windows. To TRULY execute programs, (even installers), with elevated privileges, you MUST explicitly set the option Run As Administrator. If this is not done, then some things may not get done properly. There are a couple of ways to set the Run As Administrator option. 1. Right-click on the program icon or executable file, then click on Run As Administrator. This method will set the option for only this execution instance. 2. Right-click on the program icon or executable file, then click on Properties, then click on Advanced, then check the box for Run As Administrator and click OK, then back on the Properties dialog window, click Apply, then click OK. I am sorry - perhaps I did not understand your earlier post, - so you are saying that you EXPLICITLY use Run As Administrator to launch Sonar, AND that you explicitly used Run As Administrator to install Sonar? Because logging in to Windows with an Admin user type is most definitely NOT the same as using Run As Administrator. 2 different things, that give you 2 DIFFERENT sets of execution privileges. Please forgive my insistence at getting this point exactly correct, just trying to get it precisely determined. Bob Bone

I think the run as administrator option changes in different versions of Windows 7. My Wife's laptop has Professional and I bought Premium which I was allowed to install on 2 computers. Hers asks for permission, mine does not. And with Premium there seems to be no option to run as administrator at all like there is on her version. I have never had any issues pertaining to the "run as Administrator" I keep reading about. At first I thought I might have a mess on my hands but 3 years down the road I see no issues.
