Tuner - installing Guitar Rig LE 4 AFTER X1 installation?
After having massive problems installing/registering X1 Producer, Dimension Pro and other related things from dvd, I read that the Guitar Rig tuner is OK. As I didn't initially install Guitar Rig, I don't have a clue as how to install it - I can't find it by reading the dvd's contents in the Windows Explorer ... can anynone please help?
The dvd-sleeves I was supplied with hadn't been labelled correctly: Any sticker with the X1 serial number was missing completely - but CW support were very quick to help! Only one of the four dvd-sleeves I was supplied with carried stickers: dvd 1, which contains the installation for X1, confusingly had serials for Dimension Pro and Guitar Rig 4 LE
I would use a freeware tuner I used to use on my former PC, but no matter what I install and set in Windows, I can't get any audio going through to the tuner.

??? If you installed all the content I'd imagine the exe is in there somewhere. Check your Start menu for a folder named Guitar Rig or Native Instruments. Also the version that comes with Sonar actually gets registered at NI as a special Sonar version so perhaps if you get a hold of NI they could send you a new link or something. I'd check with Cakewalk first though. They might have a download link for the exe as well. Also I just checked and GR came on disc one of my DVD set which I believe is the set up disc. At least that's the disc that has the registration number for GR. I bought the Suite though so it might be different for your version. The tuner is awesome. Super accurate.

Thanx Beepster! I checked on dvd 1 and nothing there looks like an '.exe' for Guitar Rig - there's also no reference to it on my PC (just ran three searches and checked manually, too). I think I clicked it off when it was offered as an installation option, so there's no GR.exe on my machine. Would I be right in assuming that clicking 'autorun.exe' on dvd 1, starting the X1 installation, could lead to GR being offered as one of the options there? I'm just too timid to continue by clicking 'install' again, for fear of compromising my current X1 installation which was absolute hell to get running - it's still a bit dubious ...

Guitar Rig is in one of the .bin files. There is no separate .exe file, the installation starts up at the end of the Sonar installation. You would have noticed it as you get to accept it or refuse it. Check your Start Menu. If you're sure its not there, try doing a Custom Install of Sonar, only checking what you want installed. Yeah, if you unchecked it on install you borked yourself a little. Try the custom install as joakes said and just check off GR while excluding everything else. Also it might be good practice for you to actually uninstall X1 and reinstall it again if you had a hard time because you may have to do it again at some point so it's something you want to be familiar with. Just a thought.

Thanx again beepster AND Thanx Joakes! If I go and uninstall X1 and reinstall INCLUDING Guitar Rig this time, will I have to register Dimension Pro, SI-Strings etc., too (same registration code, or do I need new ones?)? I'll try the custom install first - very grateful for the encouragement good people!! I'll report on any success.
I will practise installing X1 - I might have no choice! I do install software quite regularly (I build my PCs and usually have at least dual-boot systems with Linux etc.), it's just that I feel I'm getting too old for the hassle X1 is giving me: first no serial, then registration needed on Dimension Pro and SI-Strings, which had to be done 'as administrator', so now I can't use SI-Strings unless I started X1 as administrator, inexplicable sporadic drop outs after inserting certain VST effects (for instance LP-64 EQ) or after simply jumping to another part in the arrangement, missing recordings despite seeing the waveform during recording, and other assorted difficulties.

I'm getting drop outs with the LP-64! That's true. That's a bug and ought to be fixed. Be careful, the X1 installation instructions specifically mention something about not installing over a Dim Pro install, dl them from your store account. About the reg codes... I dunno what's happening with that. Lot's of people are having audio dropouts for various reasons though... I'd really like a bad ass audio card, before I commit to blaming Sonar though.. Like if I had a Focusrite Saffire 56.. I bet I'd be able to figure out the problem. Right now I'm doing, "el cheapo," on the audio card front....
too many lasers... Sonar = audio editing ninja of a music software!

I believe it would be the same registration numbers. I'm not understanding exactly why you had such a hard time. There were no serial numbers with your product??? That's weird. But I think that info is on the splash screens anyway. Also you should have to use "Run As Administrator" after the initial installation process is complete. As far as the drop outs that's pretty whack. A few things I'd suggest... a) make sure you have updated to the X1 D patch b) go to every site of every piece of hardware (including your computer hardware) and check for driver updates and c) optimize your system for audio. There is a system optimization guide here on the site somewhere but I used the Sweetwater guide (google Sweetwater Audio Optimization and you should find it). There is one step in the Sweetwater guide that should be avoided though. I believe it's the step on Page filing or something like that. Sonar supposedly uses that stuff so you leave it the way it is. Someone else will have to clarify that. Actually you might want to call Cake tech support just to solidify things if you still run into problems after all this. Cheers.

IMHO dual boot is a waste of time. Maybe you need to update your methods so you're not wasting time managing two images instead of one. If you select all the defaults when you install, it should install evertything you need including Guitar Rig 4. If you try to do a custom install, you need to know what you are doing. Make sure you install in all the default folders or you will have problems with that also. To use Guitar Rig, insert an audio track, right click the Fx bin, and select Audio Fx from the menu and then look for Guitar Rig. The first time you run Guitar Rig, you should launch the Standalone version from Windows Start-Native Instruments-Guitar Rig 4 and then select Service Center from the Help Menu. That will update you to the latest version. Then you can close that and load it in Sonar as I said before.

Daveny5, sorry to have been confusing - I was trying to portray myself as someone who normally can install software reasonably well. My DAW PC is solely for music and not a dual boot system. I have as little as possible installed on there. My family all use Linux to go on line since we had dialler problems and other security issues (paranoia from a long time ago ... win 95,98, 2000!). I'm not managing any images, as I just reinstall if/when a system becomes compromised. But I do get your point: dual boot seems obsolete at present, it's just a habit; however, I do like to keep myself open to diversity;-) Thanx for your input on Guitar Rig - I had read somewhere on the forum, that it needs running standalone first, but it's all confusing enough, so I appreciate the help! I'll try the custom install first, and if that's unsuccessful, I'll go for the re-installation ... I only said 'no' to Guitar Rig, because I prefer recording my guitar via mics and didn't think it offered anything I wanted (I never used the Amplitube I got with Sonar 6).

Beepster, more thanx! My Sonar X1 was seriously shipped in a sealed box with four dvds, only one of which had a sticker. It was for Dimension Pro and Guitar Rig. It was on dvd 1, that contains the X1 installation. Dimension Pro is on dvd 3. So I was unsuccessfully attempting to enter a Dimension Pro serial for an X1 installation. The Dimension Pro sticker contains no hint at it being for Dimension Pro except that it doesn't begin CXSP, instead it begins CWDM. I found this out after three days of questioning my sanity, when I angrily contacted Cakewalk support. They were very helpful! I think that someone in the shipping department at Cakewalk just packed the dvds in the wrong sleeves. Thanks for other info. I'm going to have to get to my DAW to see if I can get this tuner (the only thing I want from Guitar Rig ...) - I wonder if I ought to just buy an actual guitar tuner?

GR is nice for a little extra shaping of a mic'd sound sometimes. I have GR5 now though which is WAY better than GR4 LE. Wish they would have tossed Amplitude into my Suite package though. Curious as to how that sounds.

Wow... that's really whack. But as I said my GR sticker was on DVD 1 as well with the X1 S/N. The Dim Pro one was on disc 3 I believe but it actually said DimPro on it. Very strange and yeah... I'd be pretty frustrated about that too. Hope you get it all sorted. Cheers!

I did exactly this a few months ago. According to my notes, I ran the original X1 install and made sure Guitar Rig was checked this time. The trouble I ran into is that I had previously upgraded to X1 Expanded, which gave me a new serial number and registration code. The X1 installer insists on having valid non-Expanded serial number to install, so I had to revert back to the original X1 serial number. Then, once GR was installed, X1 insisted on re-registering, and neither registration code would work. I ended up looking in the registry to find the serial number, and changing it to the Expanded serial number - then the Expanded registration code worked. Whew! If you're not currently running X1 Expanded, all should work fine. If you're running Expanded, you might have to change the serial number in the registry as I did.

AND...if you have X1 Expanded...both 32 and 64 bit installed, you have to edit the serial numbers in the registry in two different places. The one edit won't fix it for both versions.

I successfully got GR 4 LE installed - thanx for getting me there! I did exactly as xtrumpeter and daveny5 recommended: installed from dvd 1 and deselected everything but GR, then ran GR standalone, registered (or was registering first ...?) - yet when I insert an audio track in X1 and place GR in the fx bin, I can't see any audio reaching the tuner ... I get sound coming out of my speakers, the track can be armed and recorded into, and GR can be used on the audio there, BUT I can't use it to tune my guitar/bass (neither in standalone GR nor with GR as an inserted effect)!?! I think I've not understood something in the basic routing/installation of my interface. I'm going into the Hi-Z input of FA-66 input 1, which is the preamp input on the right. As I haven't been able to get any audio into the PC at all, unless X1 is running, I suspect I haven't set up something in Win7 to make the audio also reach non-X1 software. I tried four different freeware guitar tuners prior to this, but I couldn't get any reading from them despite selecting the FA-66 as audio device. Does anybody know if this is a problem with limited functionality of my interface under Win 7 64bit? Or is there something simple eluding me?

I like GR! Not just the tuner! I've already used it successfully and happily on bass and guitar tracks directly input via hi-Z - clean sounds only yet: the factory preset 'There Will Be Oil' (or sth. like that) for guitar sounded really good for the arrangement I was trying. I can run GR standalone and get the sound with amp sims and fx, so playing sounds more authentic than the usual dry hi-Z sound I get; Yet X1 records a dry track directly from the input with no GR influence. Then, if I liked the GR settings I was playing through, I just put GR in the track's fx bin with the desired GR-preset chosen. Or I can play around with other sound enhancements on the 'virgin' track. Very handy.
Two issues, though: when opening a project, a window informs me that tracks are routed to silent outputs - these are precisely the tracks with GR in their fx bins - but I can hear them, so I don't get the reference to silent outputs!? My most recent project took over two hours to complete mixdown via 'bounce to tracks'-'entire mix'-'new track', whereas rendering usually only takes a few minutes!?
I've started to go through the 'Sweetwater' optimization suggested by beepster - thanx!

I don't have a solution to your problems but if you like GR4 go to Native Instruments website and try the GR5 demo. It only let's you run it for half an hour but it is a fully functional version and you can download it as many times as you want (I downloaded it a few times at once so I could just reinstall it as soon as the demo ran out without having to fiddle around too much). It's way better than GR4 LE and because you bought Sonar you can buy it for $100 if you like it. So far it's been more than worth it for me. Cheers.

Yeah... it's WAY better than the older versions of GR. I was quite pleased with it myself. Doesn't replace the real thing but you can get pretty darned close. If you got the Anderton vids with Sonar he does a section on really tweaking out amp sims (and he uses GR4) to make them sound even better. I believe it is in the second vid "The Next Level". There is also a text based description he wrote of the process over on SOS. Have fun... oh and be sure to read the GR manual. A lot of your questions might get answered there.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I made the mistake of not installing GR 4 when I installed Sonar X2 Producer (from a Cake Store download, not a DVD). However I have tried to do the custom install to only select GR to install, but it is not on the list op selectable options, in fact it is not mentioned anywhere at all in the Custom Install dialogues. Any ideas? Thanks
