Turning off effects while recording.....

That's odd - sounds like a plugin isn't functioning properly - not turning off when you request it.
Have you tried using the Sonar button which bypasses all effects?
 
 

You are using Sonar X1d. There are updates to Sonar, namely X2a, --I believe there were updates to these plugs also.
Best bet is to not use those plugs until you are mixing down.
Also on Control Panel there are options to try--like turn the PDC Button on/off; reset audio/midi engines etc.
You can use different values of the Bit Depths for your project, adjust sound card latency etc.
 
So is this a malady of Sonar? Some or all plugs reports a 'delay compensation' buffer when launched- but if turned off does not exit the cache-Does Sonar always leaves this cache active and only dissolves when restarted?

Normally, when I'm recording, I can use most effects (delay, chorus, reverb, etc), but there are a few plugins that MUST be turned off while recording, such as Perfect Space and LP64. 
 
But, here's my problem.... if I just turn them off, the bad latency is still there.  I literally have to delete the plugin from my track, SAVE it and then RESTART Sonar.  Huge pain in the ass.  Basically, what happens is..... if I decide I wanna add a guitar part to a song, I "can't"........ unless I delete a bunch of plugins.

I get that as well with said plugins. Here's the trick for me. Disable/turn them off....then stop the audio engine and then restart it. That should take care of the latency...at least that's what works for me. There's something with the audio engine and certain plugs....if you use them while it's on and then turn the plugs off, you still get latency. But if you kill the engine and restart with the plugs turned off, you should be fine. If that doesn't work, you can always use the PDC button in your control bar which may help. Good luck.

Can't you just freeze the other tracks?

When ever that's happened to me, it is the Delay plug in that causes the latency.

I prefer the blunt approach - when I record an overdub, I disable ALL Fx via the 'E' shortcut.
 
Can't remember if this was/is a feature of X1D Expanded or just X2
