Tutorial videos "SWA Complete Sonar X2" -- relevance for Platinum user, still newb-ish ?

Hi, I stumbled across this 50-video series on youtube

https://www.youtube.com/p...PgUgvrNuSvVyfv5qkll0qj

I watched a few and very much like how he explains things. I wonder if it would be worthwhile watching some of these though, as they are about X2. Has anyone else seen these, and if so, what would you advise? Can you imagine there would be any sections which would be obsolete (i.e. dead wrong; as opposed to not up-to-date, i.e. not discussing post X2 features, of course ;-) ) In other words I don't want to waste time learning soemthing which is now useless.

I do have other resources e.g. Groove3, by the way, just wondering about this particular SWA

I am working with Platinum, and I use these all the time. A few of the techniques have been streamlined, or the interface isn't identical to the videos, but the content of it is solid. I have found that it improves your workflow, watching him do his thing, and you get a sense as much of the "why" as the "how". There are features I thought I would never use, because I didn't yet fully understand the feature set (audio snap is one that comes to mind) that I feel at home with now. I think that series also explains the newer style tool bar and the HUD rather well. There are some "hidden features" to that alone that will get you moving around the GUI much more efficiently.

I've owned this series for a while now and it is extremely useful for getting a good general foundation in almost all areas of the program. I'd say about 95% of it is still completely current... as in the stuff shown has not changed at all since X2.

The remaining 5% is a mixed bag of stuff that has...

    a) Changed significantly: The only MAJOR thing that's changed drastically is editing/comping/lanes stuff so you'll have to learn how to use Comping Mode, Quick Comp, etc from other sources like the useful vid about it in the Cake TV section of the site (that vid moves VERY fast but is crammed with good info if you pause it after every statement and try out what is being described). However the other editing/recording modes haven't really change nor been removed either so those sections are still valid.

    b) Things that have changed only slightly and/or are easy to figure out: Like the Control Bar improvements and the new Piano Roll View stuff. This stuff just needs a quick look at the manual to catch up to the minor differences so if something does't look the same in SPlat as it does in the vid look it up. Most of these changes are documented in the Cake TV section, the eZines (I've been downloading each eZine and storing them in a folder with my other manuals and reference material) and in the Reference Guide.

    c) Things that have been added (not changed or altered): ARA integration, Melodyne, Addictive Drums 2, etc (but a lot of that stuff was in X3 and Karl released an extra vid to cover some of that stuff in the "Complete" package... not sure if those got uploaded to youtube as well). Then there is REALLY new stuff (SPlat only) like VocalSync, Drum Replacer, Upsampling, etc that again you can reference through CakeTV, the eZines or the reference guide.

The complete SWA series is 9 hours I think so that's a LOT of watching and learning. I use the vids more as a reference than expecting to watch it all at once and retain everything. Something that helps me get a handle on the contents of such vids is watching them on my laptop while I have my DAW running (a separate machine) and actually play around with the features/techniques being shown. This of course turns that 9 hours of viewing into a MUCH longer ordeal but the knowledge sticks better and I poke around outside of the basic lesson material to get an even better understanding of what's going on (and I find other not so obvious stuff that isn't covered).

If you liked those vids I would highly recommend you try to pick up the other two SWA vids Karl did, X2 Producer FX (goes into great detail on ALL of the plugins that came with X2, most of which still remain in SPlat) and the Virtual Instruments one (shows in detail how to use all the synths and virtual instruments that came with X3).

I really like Karl's style. He's extremely thorough and does not get bogged down in subjective crap like showing you "his way" or making you watch him mix something that may or may not be useful to the viewer. It's more like a visual manual as opposed to a "tutorial".
