Two Alesis MutiMix 8 devices at same time?

Hey there,

We have two Alesis MultiMix 8 units. We bought one and it was really great so our guitar player bought a second one so he could have it at his house to work with. Well, now we've asked ourselved the obvious question.. can we hook them both up and get 20 inputs?

Intial tests have failed to get both units to initalize at the same time... So I'm wondering if anyone here has been able to get such a configuration working.

which driver mode are you using? ASIO will only support one soundcard at a time, so you'd have to try to use them together in WDM driver mode. after changing to WDM driver mode, restart sonar and let the wave profiler run.

With ASIO drivers in some cases you can have two of the same brand device with only one driver but only if the company that makes it designs it that way. I think MOTU and RME have some that will work like that but I would not expect Alesis to have anything that fancy, you are lucky if you get their driver to work with one.

If they have a WDM driver you could try that. ASIO has a one driver limit but with WDM you can have more then one loaded. This works most of the time when you have two different brands of sound cards but I don't know what will happen when you have two of the same one. Maybe Plug and Play will see them as unique devices and load more then one instance of the WDM driver. It's worth a try.

Oh, one more thing. There is no word clock or SPDIF connections on those things so you won't be able to get them both working from the same sample rate clock. That is going to be a larger problem then the driver... I don't think it's going to work.

yes - I agree with what Frank said as well. M-audio delta series also allows multiple cards in ASIO mode, but the clock sync will become a problem for cards not designed to sync together and Alesis doesn't design for that.

I have the Multimix 16 FW and IIRC it says in the manual that only 1 Multimix can be connected to a system at a time. Something about the drivers referencing any Multimix connected to your computer using the same name/identifier. The Multimix 12/16 FW units have an SPDIF output so you should be able to get different audio interface with SPDIF input to sync to the Multimix if you're using those models.

You can use me as your eSoundz referral (altima_boy_2001).

I used to have a multimix 12 FW and all 12 channels were available for input, stereo pair output. I'm sure that the 16 allows 16 in 2 out.
