Two Audio Interfaces

Hi all,

I'd recently picked up the Focusrite 18i8 USB 2 interface.  Shouldn't I be able to use that along with my Multiface II correct if I use ASIO drivers in Sonar?

Thanks!

Donny

ASIO will only recognize 1 device, even if they are the same unit and drivers you will only see one list of in/outs and MIDI.

You can swap between the 2 devices under ASIO.
To use the 2 together you will therefore have to try using WDM/KS mode and see if it plays well with your system.

Got it.  I'll try that later today.  That would be cool if it worked together under WDM.  I used to do that with the RME and PODXT and it worked fine like that.

You could connect the S/PDIF out from one card to the S/PDIF in of the other as a way of using them both together.

Well technically ASIO supports one driver.  So if you have more than one of the same device that supports chaining, you could use multiple devices, but in this case, no.

Kev I don't get your drift, The only thing that comes out of any interface I have owned SPDIF output is the playback from the computer, not the inputs.

Maybe you're right.  I did try it a few years ago with a UX2 and an AP192 and it seemed to work as far as I can remember.  I have no way of testing it right now though.

I can set what feeds SPDIF outs on all 3 of my MAudio interfaces, same place as I set any other output. Check the manual. ADAT is funner, 8 ins, 8 outs, where SPDIF is just 2x2.

So what you saying is if an interface has a GUI (software) mixer you can route inputs 1 and 2 to the SPDIF output? Cool.
The only thing I'm thinking is you'd be back to square one if your computer only can recognize one interface. I guess it depends on the brand and how fancy the software.
But at best it would only give you 2 more inputs unless you are using ADAT.

You can use WDM/KS driver mode (allows multiple audio interfaces)... and use S/PDIF or Wordclock (from one unit to the other) to make sure there's a single clock source.

IMO, It's not worth the hassle.  If you need more inputs (and your audio interface has a Lightpipe input port), it's easier to just get an 8-channel set of converters (Digimax FS, Octa-Pre, ADA-8000) and connect those to the Lightpipe input.

doncolga - hopefully your Multifaceted II has an ADAT out light pipe connection. if so, the Scarlett has the ADAT input waiting for you. Use ASIO and you are able to get 8 additional, controllable and rout able inputs into your audio input flow.

Thanks for the comments everybody.  I wonder what are the chances of the Scarlett getting lower latency than the MultifaceII?  I'm guessing not?..thoughts on that?  A hitch here for the time being is that I don't believe 64 bit drivers are available for the Scarlett.
