Two MOTU 8Pres...Assignment Not Being Saved??

I run two MOTU 8Pres'.

When I set up the Template for tracking I assigned all the interface I/Os.

So for example OVRHD MIC LEFT would be assigned input "Right...8Pre 1...1"
and OVRHD MIC RIGHT would be assigned input "Left...8Pre 1...1".

And Master would output to "Headphones 1-2 8Pre 1"

So...my question is why will the templates launch and randomly switch between 8Pre 1 or 2?

So for example if it launches correctly, my setup works.

If it launches incorrectly my inputs are switched from 8Pre 1 to 8Pre 2 and my output is switched from 8Pre1 to 8Pre 2.

I have a firewire cable plugged into 8Pre 1 and take the other end and plug it into 8Pre 2. I then take a second firewire cable from 8Pre 2 and connect the other end to the laptop.

What would happen if I connected each 8Pre individually (with their own dedicated cable) to the laptop?

Thank you all for your help.

I would think that daisy chaining them would be the correct way to keep the units the same each time you launch (the way you're doing it is daisy chaining...from the computer to the first unit and from the first unit to the 2nd).
I would think if you used the star configuration (each with a separate cable to the computer) then it would randomly pick with each start up which one it called 1 or 2.

so, I would think you have it correct and don't know why it would change on each launch.

    guess I'm not much help...

EDIT:  do the 8 pres have power on switches?  if so, make sure and power them on one at a time with a few seconds between.  make sure the first one is booted completely up before powering on the second one.

    Ahhhh!

    Maybe that is it.

    Yes...daisy chained.

    Yes...power switches.

I will power up number one first and when it is completely operational I will power up number two, thanks.
