Two Unique Metronome Questions

Trying to think of different ways to overcome some metronome dilemmas. Had two ideas I wanted to bounce off you guys....

1) Am I correct that if I added an SBLive card into a DAW that I could rely on the SBLive as a target for Sonar's MIDI metronome, and also use the SBLive's onboard synth, even though the SBLive runs internally at 48K sample rate?  In other words, if I'm running a 44.1K project I could still use the SBLive in this way without something in the project loosing sync or some other timing issue?

OR.....

2) What if I were to connect the RME's MIDI OUT cable back to its MIDI IN jack.... Could I then put a VSTi on a track in Sonar and essentially have it become a metronome?  The thinking here is Sonar would use the RME MIDI Out to send the metronome MIDI data as usual, which would then be coming right back in and driving the VSTi.   Or would this be too latent?

This stuff is bordering on going over my head so any thoughts on these two ideas would be really appreciated...

Personally I think it's a bad idea to keep the SB.
You'll see I joined this forum in 2004. That was in the days I used an SB Audigy II and Cakewalk Guitar Studio.
I fought for 5 years with my Audigy II card. I refused to give up on it because I had paid $250 and I loved the set up with all my jacks on the front of my computer with controls etc. I was told that you needed ASIO drivers but the Creative ASIO drivers would not work so people here told me to use MME. This made it stable but out of sync with overdubs.

I  had my Atari system synced to my Yamaha MD8 recorder. I also used hardware for sounds all patched through a Yamaha 01V digital mixer- So audio on the MD 8 and midi was Atari driving hardware synths all mixed to SPDIF to DAT tape, nice system but--

I was keen on getting Cakewalk to work so everything would be ITB, but all the audio would be out of sync. Also I would have drop outs and every possible thing that could go wrong would go wrong.
I was told to get a proper interface so bought a M Audio fast track pro :(   and finally after fighting for 5 years I could now record in Cakewalk.  But I was still ignorant about using Soft synths. That was my next revalation!

I had to totally remove the SB card from any DAW computer because it caused issues with any other ASIO drivers.  Beleieve me I tried a few times to make it work on different computers...
    Note:
my Son gave me this Card Deluxe  http://www.pcrecording.com/carddlux.htm  PCI card
and I have used that side by side with other interfaces with out issue. Only the SB card ever has caused me greif.

I'm not sure why you would want to use those SB old sounds when there is so much available now that is 100% better sounding and a lot of it can be gotten for free from Web sites like KVR. Or the complete Air packages go on sale for under $50 which have more sounds than anyone could use in a million years.

I think the heart of your problem is your not progressing forward with you set up. Even using old versions of Sonar will have issues when trying to set up on a modern PC. But most of us have left anything to do with Wavetable or Sound fonts way behind and everyone uses VST soft synth now without issue. Another eason to at least upgrade to Home Studio is you will get TTS-1 and a few way better sounding GM synths to use. And the metronome will work just fine if your using a RME interface it will all be rock solid and no sync issues..

Warning. do not attempt to have 44.1 and 48 on your system, that will be a train wreck.

I only use the SBLive for it's MIDI abilities, and just to have another sound conduit to pipe the OS sounds through (back into the RME) so those stay out of the way of the main audio work.  So it's never in the picture of the main audio path so to speak, but it is incredibly handy to have the MIDI input and the on-board synths & sound font engine, and have Sonar also trigger it for the click track (which then also allows earlier version of Sonar to have a click).

FYI, I do own plenty of quality VSTi's like Superior Drummer 2.

The 44.1K vs. 48K matter is a serious one that I'm still not 100% clear on.....is it really an issue that I run projects in 44.1K yet the SBLive has an 48K internal rate?  Realize, the SBLive audio is NEVER enabled in Sonar, it is purely there as a MIDI tool, and as a default sound target for the OS sounds so I can still hear them without anything getting into my main Sonar audio path.   If there is some reason this setup could be a problem PLEASE let me know the specifics because it will factor into whether or not I want to try and bring the SBLive into this new system or not.

One interesting finding is that I did a listening test against the RealTek onboard audio "card" and the audio on that is superior to the SBLive, I have no idea why many people feel the opposite.  So... I'd probably keep the RealTek active for secondary audio (OS and 2nd reference listening) and relegate the SBLive to ONLY MIDI use in Sonar (and maybe disable the audio side of SBLive altogether if that's possible).  Should be interesting to see if I can get all that to play well.   Again though, I still would really appreciate some thoughts from you guys on the 48K internal sample rate situation with the SBLive, whether or not that may be a problem for my intended purpose.

Thank all of you again for all the help and tolerance in helping wrap up this lengthy rebuild journey.
