Tying beats together with new Step Sequencer a pain compared to older version.

In the older version of step sequencer I could hold down the CTRL key while dragging the mouse over the beats I wanted and they tied together. I cannot do that anymore with the newer X1 step sequencer! I have to choose the beats individually and then go back over with the CTRL key held and tie them together. Why the extra step?
