U2 Edge Shimmer Effect using VSTs?
Hi there, Has anyone recreated the Edge's shimmer effect in the box? I use a Boss SE-70 to get it with hardware, but I haven't sorted out the plugs to use to get it in Sonar yet...

Have you looked to see if there are any Amplitube presets on their site?

I also used to use a Boss [SE-50] for these effects; replaced now by a PitchFactor. You may want to check out the Pitchproof freebie, then route it to your favorite delay/reverb plugin. I haven't tried it yet. It's something that I saw in the Software forum.

I too have a Pitchfactor - fun pedal! :) I have not found anything quite right on the Patch Exchange. I did find a patch that was an attempt, but I'm not sure Amplitube has the proper pitch tools to create the multiple octaves, a few hertz off. I think I'll try and build a pro-channel effects bin for this manually and make it a send. I've got the delay and reverb plugs, now to see if I have the proper pitch plugs (perhaps in my Waves Platinum). I will also check out the freebie you linked to. thanks! On a side note, I noticed that Eventide has a VST for space - think I'll check that out. Wish that had the Pitchfactor as a VST as well...

James, can you give a link for reference? I am not a U2 fan, and as such have no idea what this effect is, but I'm curious. I did watch the "It Might Get Loud" documentary and chuckled when they brought in the guitarist's effects rig - with a frickin' forklift!

On a side note, I noticed that Eventide has a VST for space - think I'll check that out. No doubt that you've discovered it's the single Blackhole algorithm from Space. It's a cool, out-there 'verb configuration, but it won't have the pitch shifting capabilities of the Shimmer algo. Unless I'm really missing something here. I am not a U2 fan, and as such have no idea what this effect is, but I'm curious. You've probably heard it before, Bit. It's like a synth wash echoing the input in upper octaves. The "ADSR" can be volume pedal, playing technique, eBow ... followed by cavernous reverb and/or delays for the sustain & release. Compression can help. I've also used an EHX Freeze or Pigtronix Philosopher King for the envelope. An essential part is the pitch shift - one or two octaves up. Some add chorusing; I prefer slight detuning at the octaves. Parallel routing is optional. One of the early Lanois applications used recirculation of the octaves in the delay line. It's something I use often for a cascading 'barberpole' effect. You run out of upper bandwidth after 2-3 iterations anyway, but it adds to the initial buildup. Of course, stereo enhances the sense of space. Not a huge U2 follower, either, but people often point to the 47th Grammy performance video to illustrate the shimmer effect. I'd rather give props to Bill Ruppert and what he does with EHX effects in the Effectology series. The first part of this video shows shimmer effects & some variations. In the second part he goes symphonic with a favorite of mine, Adagio for Strings. I'm not convinced about the Y-Adapter application, though.

It probably helps at the beginning of this signal chain to start with a Rick 330 through an Vox AC30, that will give you that initial wonderful chimmy tone. Could the swirling pitch shifting tone come from using a Flanger?

There is a video under "Tutorials: Vocals" called "Experimental Vocal Reverb" on this page showing how to use Melodyne to create the effect

I don't hear reverb in that effect, just a ducked delay with high feedback.

I think you could get that effect with the SoundToys Native collection... their effects are really deep, and you can get pretty much all of the ingredients... up to you to mix them<G>!

Sorry I've been out bit, Here's how I have shimmer set up: 1. Guitar signal split at my Valvulator. One side goes through the effects and amps, the other to my Boss SE-70 for the shimmer effect. 2. Send the shimmer signal to a volume pedal to control when/how much you get. 3. Shift the signal up one or two octaves. I then adjust the pitch shifts so they are ever so slightly out of tune. It's 100% wet on the shimmer channel, so you only here the high pitch octaves. 4. Feed the octaves into a long delay - about half a second if my memory serves correctly. 5. Delayed signal goes into a really lush reverb setting. This creates a shimmering, high octave wash that follows your playing. It's easy to confuse it with a synth...

for classic U2 i run two delays in parallel, one slapback and one on 1/8dot with high feedback and the shimmer is from an octaverb. thats in pedals but I believe guitar rig has it (the octver and add reverb).. sounds like a ditto to smallstonefan above.
