UA 710 twinfinity

Anybody used a Universal Audio 710 or the Summit 2BA-221? Both have tube and solid state blend, they are both in the same price range. Both companies have good reputations. I haven't heard either mic pre so just wondering what your individual experiences might be with either of them. I primarily use a tlm 103 for vocals and sm81 for acoustic guitar.

I think you'll love either one of them. I don't have either but a guy I record with totes around the UA 710 and it's an exceptional piece of gear for the price. It had a great vibe and sounded great with both vocals and acoustic guitars.

You should do some searching over on gearslutz.com - maybe someone has some audio clips posted or more in-depth reviews from those who own them and have used them with multiple sources.

    Have fun!

Not sure if I can provide much feedback as I just got the Twin Finity last week and only used it on one session.

Let me start by saying that I hadn't owned a tube pre-amp until this guy and I like it a lot. The tube side is very warm and has some very nice harmonic distortion when I recorded an acoustic guitar this weekend. It's definitely flattering the recording because of it. The solid state side is very clean and when the two are mixed together provide a bit of the "best of both worlds". Although driving the solid state side provides a nasty distortion as compare to the grind from the tube side. Of course, no solid state pre-amp provides that.

So, I think I made a good purchase. I can't comment on the Summit as I've never had a chance to try it out.

    Hope this helps,
    Tom

Thanks guys! Gearslutz didnt have much on the Summit but what i read was all positve. The 710 hasnt been out very long but there are a couple of reviews and they all spoke well of it. Probably hard to go wrong with either, that being the case I will probably go with the 710 for no reason other than the coin landed heads!

I think SOS and Tape Op (or was it EM) had reviews. SOS liked it and no real faults have been talked about with what I read. $750 for a preamp - it ought to be pretty good. And it is flexible, which is the real selling point.

    WAS ON THE SAME BOAT

the summit have a variable impedance so basically it can match all kind of mic , while the ua msut be paired with the right mic , on the otha hand the summit "best of both world thing" is in serie that means that you apply first the lampe then solidstate while the UA is real parallel so a real mix ( so better in theory)

Will try before buy , in my case !!
