UA-6176 Channel Strip

Anybody own or use one? I'm thinking of purchasing this item for use on vocals. Pro's, Cons, advice? I just want to make sure that it's worth my hard-earned money. I have just enough space in my rack left and thinking of getting another mic pre. The guys at Sweetwater are steering me towards this

Excellent - it would set off your Grace nicely. Pre is very good, the compressor is incredible.

Plug your KSM44 into it and anything will sound good.

    MBGC,
Thanks for the in-put. Quick question. I noticed it has a mic pre and a seperate compressor output. Will the compressor still function interactively with the mic pre and send both signals out of the mic pre output? I'll be sending the output of the mic-pre into the line-in of the MOTU. Why have a seperate compressor output? Curious.

The mic pre and the compressor output can be separated - If you flick the "join" switch it puts the output of the pre into the compressor. The compressor also has a separate input, so you can use the two independently. I would hit "join", then put the output of the compressor into the MOTU. The idea is that usually you should usually compress acoustic instruments, especially bass and vocals, before they hit your A/D converters. If you turn the knob on the compressor to "bp", it bypasses the unit. The mic pre output is just the pre by itself.

    I don't own one, but I've sold a few.

p.s. - pardon my syntax, I've taken three phone calls during this response.
    Hope I made some sense.

    Yo Larry -
Check my profile - I promised myself I wouldn't solicit business on the forum, but you can e-mail me.

The clue is in the username

    I own both , the 6176 and the 2 channel unit .
I use it for mic-ing guitar cabinets , vocals and z-input for certain guitars .
I really like what it does for me . There are better units out there for more money , but I don't need one .
I own several Universal Audio units and love the tone and proformance I get from them .
If you would like a very good , next choice , try Pendulum Audio .
I know that you will really enjoy the 6176 though .

    Best of Luck ,

    Tube Amp,

Thanks for the reply. After doing a little more research and a lot of thinking, I ordered the Avalon M5 vocal mic pre. Since I was looking for pre or strip for vocals only, I decided on that unit. I already use the Grace 201 for recording acoustic guitar, and I'm very pleased with it's performance and sonic quality. I was not happy with the sound I was getting with my vocals straight into the MOTU. Everyone I spoke with and the reviews were rave on the Avalon for vocals. Oh well, if I ain't happy with it, I'll sen it back and try the 6176. Thanks again for th input. Sounds like you've got some pretty decent gear.

    Regards,
