UAD-1 Users Question

As we know, in Sonar, we can overpower the cpu and export/bounce audio with more plugins than we can actually support for a live playback.

Does this also apply to the UAD-1?? Can you render (bounce/export) more plugins than the card is able to support in a live playback scenario?

    Jake,
The UAD-1 plugins work the same as normal/host based plugins do with regard to bounce/export - you can bounce a track with UAD-1 plugs and then re-allocate those plugs to other tracks and in this way, have more processed tracks in the final mix than would fit on a single card at one time. (That was you question, right?)

Thanks guys...UAD has a chart saying the limit of plugins it can support for playback use, but let's say you have 10x more plugs than the limit activated during an export audio function, would it just take a really long time or as you say do you have to first bounce the tracks one by one with your desired effect into the project, then export?

While I haven't done this exact experiemnt, my experience with the card is you can load up instances of plugs until the cows come home. The problem comes when you hit PLAY. So, I assume in your scenario (which I am uncertain why you would ever do anything that way, but that's another story), should be fine with the UAD-1.

I have always been under the (potentially misled??) impression that each time you bounce audio it is rendered through your interfaces engine (Aardvark LX6 in my case), so would that be applying miniscule changes to the audio for each pass? The point of doing one giant export is to limit this. I guess I should take a (short!) reference file and bounce it like 10 ot 20 times with no effects whatsoever and see if there is a discernable difference between the 1st and 10th version. It's not like you are going to bounce things 10 times but if it does change slightly I think avoiding any extra bounces it is worth it.

    thanks again for the responses!

couldn´t you just freeze the tracks with your uad-1´s plugs and and keep the effects there, disabled, in case you need to change some settings later?

    Yes Joni, you could...

Also, I just did this exact thing last night - if you watch the UAD meter while the export to audio 2-track is happening, you can see the 'usage' bar slide up an over 100%. The highest number I saw was 119%...

Bounce sounded correct to me once complete.
