UK Download is Crippling
Any tips for downloading X1 Producer in UK? I started yesterday at around noon. Part one took 3 hours, part two failed about 3 times, I figured in the end is was because I had no app that understood .rar extensions as I was getting an 'unable to scan file' error. I finally have Part two it's now in two parts so I'm unsure if this will even install??? Because of the failed downloads I've exeeded mymonthly download limit so had to ask BT (my ISP) to up my limit for the month. I've just started Beatscape 1 which will take 2hrs 19mins and still have Beatscape part 2, Dimension Pro setuo and expansion pack, the additional content pack and the Digital Sound Factory pack. I've tried Firefox and IE9 both download at same speed (385KB p/sec) and I'm using a LAN connection not wireless. Any tips appreciated. or should I just be patient? Thanks Dean

For a few pennies more, you can order the box set. 3 hours ? Wow, took me twice that, I'm at the the end of a DSL line in a village in deepest France. I ordered the boxed set and it came within 10 days (from Ireland IIRC). Cheers, Jerry

Well, I started to DL the LE update for the hell of it, as I saw it available in my account and thought I might try LE out... but the transfer rate was something like 30-35 KB/s and I just bailed out. No way I'm suffering through that. If, and when I upgrade to the full version, i'll be ordering the physical product.

I did the downloads overnight after many a failed attempt (I think it took two or three days before I could piece the downloads together and install). I got fined by my ISP. You then read people on here bragging that it took 5 minutes and what's the fuss all about?!? I'm about to start the change from 32 bit to 64 bit so I'm hoping that I haven't deleted anything important from the download as I'm going to have to upgrade my VSTs to 64 bit so doing Sonar again will suck. By the way, why do they use .rar rather than zip? If I uninstall winrar (a program I didn't want) and try to go back to zip, opening a zipped file makes the screen flash and locks everything up. I hate computers at the moment. Grum.

You don't open the .RAR files, they are part of a self extracting archive. You should have a couple of .EXE files and some .RAR files that match the file names of the .EXEs Run the .EXE to extract. Leave the RAR alone.

I fully agree with you, I think it is a really stupid idea from Cakewalk with the download thing. I tried to download all parts just to get one CRC error after another, thef unny thing was that it was not the same file in the compressed file that caused the error, so in the end i caved in and bought the disc set.

I think it is a really stupid idea from Cakewalk with the download thing. As much as we'd love to take credit it for it, it wasn't our idea - it was customer feedback that overwhelmingly requested a download option. We don't prevent you from buying the box/media we just offer it as a separate option so that if you don't want the box and DVD's you don't have to get it and pay for something you're not going to use. Download performance: We're using a global content delivery network to offer the best download speeds we could get our hands on. Understandably - not everyone will have an internet connection that can deal with larger downloads and some ISPs throttle bandwidth.

You do not need winrar installed to use the SONAR download, simply start the .exe once all the parts are downloaded and it will take care of it for you.

Gotta be something else going on. I'm on cable and my ISP isn't throttling jack. I was getting a transfer rate of about 35 kb/s. Never been a problem in the past. High traffic? Dunno... but I know the problem wasn't my ISP... just sayin'.

We use the CDN for larger files like SONAR X1, SONAR LE does not use it - it's coming from a data center in Northern Virginia bandwidth however still shouldn't be an issue. If it continues to happen I would suggest double-checking with your ISP, just because they haven't in the past does not mean they aren't now or that something else isn't going on. We use Amazon's infrastructure for content delivery and even on my connection (which is the slowest cable connection on the planet FWIW) I'm getting a steady 150kb/sec. If it continues to give you a crummy download after another day or so - send me a PM and I'll give you an alternative download link to try out.

Apologies, it was something else that needed WINRAR - it was just strange seeing a RAR extension and I got confused! I have installed X1 64 bit from my original downloads so I'm cooking with gas now (?!?). No complaints except no 64 bit rewire and you can't do much about that! Grum.

Thank you for the reply and subsequent offer.

I didn't extract the rar files. I kept getting an 'unable to scan file' error at the end of the download and I assumed this was because I didn't have a rar extractor so my PC didn't recognise the file type. As soon as I installed WinRAR the next time the file downloaded correctly. However, I have ended up with Producer.part2.rar spilt into 2 files for some reason. The first part is 2.5 GB and the second 1.33, I also got 2 x Producer.part2 files at 0KB??? When I start the install with all the downloads in a folder on the desktop as suggested, it gets to part 2 and I get the files is corrupt. Please downlaod and try again. Am I going to have to download again? It took me 2 days to get this far. Thanks Dean

I've used free download manager for years, it should sort your issue no problems. get that to download instead of your browser . You just leave the drop box / browser monitoring on. http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ as mentioned before your connection maybe getting throttled because of your high usage.. and keep it out of peak hours (6pm - 12 am) .. so you can start FDM at whatever time .. but after it starts , a few mb later stop it.. (I'm assuming cakes servers support "resume".. it says in the download box if it does) then changes the properties for that download.. just schedule it for 12:01 at night AND the icon next to the file will turn into a clock.. if you have multiple files to download , you can do the start / stop thing on them also.. and just schedule it for later. there is an option to also switch off the pc. regardless if connection etc drops it'll resume. it's great for people with slow connections (or fast connections) when you mention about "scan" maybe it's your pc's A /v , or your net settings being REALLY strict ? my friend down the road in London (really out in the sticks ) , has 150k connection also.. which is only 3 times a 56k modem speed... thankfully mine is 800-1000k or so. in the UK it depends how far from the exchange you are if it's say BT or talk talk.. virgin/cable run their own lines. http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search will tell you how far your nearest exchange is.. and just use google maps to figure out how far it is . Paris as a city has the best net infastructure in europe or did as they heavily invested in it.. while BT wasted a load of money on the wrong tech (not fibre optic) back in the day.
