UPDATE on Squirrel

After the hurricane, I found a baby squirrel in the back yard.  I brought it in and we dried it off and started to feed it. It did live, which surprised me. At this time, it's eyes were still closed.

Squirrel finally opened his eyes and became more active.  We started to introduce grapes and other more solid foods. He also began going outside with us. He mostly stayed close to us. When he did venture off, he returned and climbed my pants leg, I guess preferring the safety of being higher up.

We could walk around the yard and squirrel would be riding on us. He'd circle around whoever he was riding when someone else came close.

As he grew, it became obvious that there was a rodent living in the house when you walked in. Daily cleaning of his cage was required, and even that did not solve the issue of odor. The final straw for me was when I saw him climb the inside of the cage after waking up, and take a wizz through the bars... it shot out 3 feet all over the floor.  Time to go outside buddy.

So I moved the cage to the back deck and placed plywood behind it and on top to shelter him a bit.  In the afternoon, my wife and I would let him out of his cage to explore the deck and the yard.

I let him out of the cage one afternoon and came inside to do something. When we went out later, squirrel was nowhere to be found.  I believe he climbed a tree and found his true calling in life... to be a squirrel.  We have been leaving pecans on the deck railings and they are disappearing and left behind is evidence that squirrel has been there. I have not seen him, but squirrels are like that.

Perhaps one day, when my wife and I are setting on the deck, squirrel will come to visit us again.  We wish him the best life a squirrel can have.

IANATZ (I Am Not A Trained Zoologist), but I once had squirrel like that one.  At least, I thought I did.  I made a little house/nest for him.  I named him, "Beauregard".  He liked cheese.

In time, he grew larger and needed more space to run around.  He loved to climb!  He was so fast, too, that I sometimes had difficulty finding him.

I had a neighbor, Eustace, who was always yammering on about things.  "Blah, Blah, Blah, Park on your own lawn!"  "Yada Yada Yada Do you know what time it is?"  You get the idea.  Anyway, he was going off on one of his rants and I interrupted him to ask if he had seen my squirrel, Beauregard.

I told Eustace the story of finding and raising him.  He seemed surprised that I would exhibit such knowledge and skill in caring for a small woodland creature.  I mentioned, in all humility, that I am not a trained zoologist.  He seemed intrigued so I took him out to the backyard.  I introduced them and they seemed to get along very well.  Eustace and Beauregard looked like they were having a great deal of fun.  Eustace would shriek and pretend to run away, while Beauregard would chase him and pounce on him.  The two of them would roll around in the grass for a while.  Fun times.

In my defense, I had warned Eustace about my lack of formal education in the field of zoology.  I later discovered that Beauregard was not, in fact a squirrel.  He was a panther.  How was I to know?  Beauregard never told me.  He did like cheese.
